The Panamanian Melting Pot

Panama is one of the most ethnically diverse countries in the Americas. The 4.4 million inhabitants are composed of:

  • Mestizos (approx. 65%): Descendants of the mixing of Spaniards and Indigenous peoples — the majority of the population and culturally influential.
  • Afro-Panamanians (approx. 15%): Two distinct groups with their own identities: The "Afro-Coloniales" (descendants of slaves, since the 16th century) and the "Afro-Antillanos" (Caribbean workers who came for the canal construction, mainly from Jamaica and Barbados). Afro-Caribbean culture shapes Bocas del Toro, Colón, and the carnivals.
  • Indigenous Peoples (approx. 12%): Seven recognized groups — Ngäbe-Buglé (the largest, approx. 260,000), Guna, Emberá, Wounaan, Naso, Bri Bri, and Bokota. Many live in autonomous Comarcas with self-governance.
  • Asians (approx. 5%): Large Chinese community (since the canal construction), along with Indians and Lebanese. Chinatown in Panama City is vibrant and culinary interesting.
  • Europeans and Americans (approx. 3%): Growing expat community, especially in Boquete and Panama City.

Panamanian Mentality

Panamanians are relaxed, warm-hearted, proud, and fond of celebrations. The word "Tranquilo" is more than a phrase — it is a philosophy of life. Stress is avoided, appointments are interpreted flexibly, and the weekend feels like it starts on Friday noon. The two major sources of national pride: the Panama Canal (symbol of sovereignty) and the national football team (La Marea Roja), which participated in a World Cup for the first time in 2018 — all of Panama was ecstatic.

The Pollera, the elaborately embroidered national costume, is worn with enormous pride — at festivals, parades, and the famous carnival. A genuine hand-sewn Pollera costs $1,000–5,000 and is a family heirloom passed down through generations.
