Threatened Paradise

Climate Change and the Guna

The San Blas Islands face an existential threat: Rising sea levels and increasing tropical storms threaten the low-lying coral islands, some of which are only 50 cm above sea level. Scientists estimate that many of the islands could be uninhabitable by 2050.

The Panamanian government has already begun developing relocation plans for Guna communities to the mainland. Some communities have already moved. It is a tragic irony: A people who have defended their autonomy and way of life for centuries are now being forced to abandon their homeland due to climate change — caused by the industrialized world.

As a traveler, you can do something: Travel consciously, book with Guna families (instead of large operators from Panama City), buy Molas, take your trash with you, and share the story. A visit to San Blas is not just a vacation experience — it is a privilege that may not be available in this form for much longer.

Coral Bleaching

The coral reefs around the islands are also suffering from rising water temperatures. Coral bleaching has become more frequent in recent years. When snorkeling, you can help: Use reef-friendly sunscreen (without oxybenzone and octinoxate), do not touch corals, and do not stand on reefs. Every little contribution counts.

Achtung

The San Blas Islands have NO medical facilities, NO police, and NO emergency services. In the event of an accident or an allergic reaction to marine life (sea urchins, jellyfish), the nearest doctor is hours away. Bring a basic first aid kit and inform yourself about the nearest evacuation possibility. Travel health insurance with repatriation is absolutely essential here.
