Discover Lima
Lima polarizes: Some see gray skies, traffic chaos, and endless suburbs. Others discover a city with 5,000 years of history, a culinary scene unmatched worldwide, and a creative pulse felt from Barranco to Miraflores. Both are right — and that's what makes Lima so fascinating.
The city, with around 10.7 million inhabitants in the metropolitan area, stretches over 50 kilometers along the Pacific coast. However, only a few districts are relevant for travelers. Plan at least 2 full days: one for the Centro Histórico and the Museo Larco, one for Miraflores and Barranco. And at least one evening for a gastronomic experience.
Orientation
The districts of Lima relevant to travelers:
- Centro Histórico: The colonial old town with the Plaza Mayor, the Cathedral, the Monastery of San Francisco, and magnificent colonial buildings. UNESCO World Heritage since 1988. Safe during the day, caution at night.
- Miraflores: The modern heart of Lima — safe, green, upscale hotels, restaurants, and shops. Parque Kennedy and the cliffs above the Pacific (Malecón) are perfect for walks. Most tourists stay here.
- Barranco: The bohemian district south of Miraflores. Colorful colonial houses, street art, galleries, bars, and the best nightlife in Lima. The Puente de los Suspiros (Bridge of Sighs) is Lima's most romantic spot.
- San Isidro: The business and embassy district. Luxury hotels, parks, upscale restaurants. Quieter than Miraflores.
- Pueblo Libre: Residential area with the Museo Larco — Peru's most spectacular museum.
- Callao: The port district with the emerging art district Monumental Callao. Visit only with a guide!
💡 Tipp
Miraflores is the best base for your stay in Lima: safe, central, with a wide range of restaurants and good connections. You can reach the Centro Histórico by Metropolitano bus (express bus, dedicated lane) in 20 minutes.
