Ostrów Tumski, Centennial Hall & More
★★★ Ostrów Tumski (Cathedral Island)
Cathedral Island is Wrocław's oldest and most magical place. Here, the city began in the 10th century as a fortified settlement on an Oder island. Today, Ostrów Tumski is a quiet, spiritual counterpoint to the bustling Rynek: Gothic churches, the majestic cathedral, and winding alleys where time seems to stand still.
The special experience: Every evening at dusk, a lamplighter in historical costume lights the 103 gas lamps of the island — by hand, with a long pole. It is one of the last gas-lit districts in Europe and a magical moment.
★★★ Katedra Św. Jana Chrzciciela (Cathedral)
The Gothic cathedral (13th–14th century) with its two distinctive towers dominates the silhouette of Cathedral Island. Inside: magnificent Baroque chapels, the oldest baptismal font in Silesia, and an elevator to the north tower (91 meters) with the best panoramic view of the city.
Plac Katedralny 18. Cathedral free. Tower elevator: 10 PLN (2.50€). Mon–Sat 10:00–17:30, Sun 14:00–16:00.
★★ Ogród Botaniczny (Botanical Garden)
Right next to the cathedral lies the beautiful Botanical Garden of the University — 7.4 hectares with over 7,500 plant species, a Japanese garden, and a lake. Perfect for a break.
Ul. Sienkiewicza 23. 15 PLN (3.50€). April–Oct: daily 8:00–18:00.
★★★ Hala Stulecia (Centennial Hall, UNESCO World Heritage)
The Centennial Hall (1913, architect Max Berg) is a milestone of modern architecture: A massive dome of reinforced concrete with a diameter of 65 meters — at the time of its construction, the largest free-standing concrete dome in the world. The building, erected for the centennial celebration of the Wars of Liberation against Napoleon, was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2006.
In front: the Wrocław Fountain (Pergola) — the largest multimedia water fountain in Poland. In summer, there are evening light and music shows (free!), attracting thousands of spectators.
Ul. Wystawowa 1. Exhibition in the Centennial Hall: 20 PLN (5€). Fountain shows: May–Oct, Fri–Sun evenings (times vary). Park freely accessible.
★★ Poznań (Posen)
Only 2 hours by train from Wrocław (or 3 hours from Berlin) lies Poznań — one of the oldest and liveliest cities in Poland. Highlights:
- Stary Rynek (Old Market Square): One of the most colorful squares in Poland. At 12 noon, two mechanical goats appear above the town hall clock and butt heads — Poznań's landmark for centuries
- Town Hall: Renaissance jewel with a rich facade and the splendid Great Hall
- Ostrów Tumski: Like in Wrocław — the Cathedral Island is the birthplace of Poland. Here, in 966 AD, the first Polish ruler Mieszko I was baptized
- Stary Browar: Former brewery, now an award-winning shopping and arts center
- Croissant Museum (Rogalowe Muzeum): Interactive show about the famous St. Martin's croissants (Rogal Świętomarciński) — a sweet pastry with protected designation of origin
Trains from Wrocław every 1–2h (2h, from 30 PLN). From Berlin: EuroCity in 3h (from 19€). Also via FlixBus.
💡 Tipp
Come to Cathedral Island at dusk and watch the lamplighter at work — he lights 103 gas lamps by hand. It is one of the most romantic and unique experiences in all of Poland. The best perspective: from the Tumski Bridge (Most Tumski), which couples have adorned with padlocks.
