Praga District & Modern Warsaw

★★ Praga — The Alternative Warsaw

On the east bank of the Vistula lies Praga — once notorious, today Warsaw's most creative and trendy district. Since Praga was largely spared during the war, here you can find the most authentic pre-war architecture in Warsaw: dilapidated tenements next to hip galleries, street art next to Marian statues in doorways.

  • Ul. Ząbkowska: Praga's "pub street" — bars, craft beer pubs, and restaurants in former factory buildings
  • Bazar Różyckiego: Warsaw's oldest flea market (since 1882). On weekends, antiques, vintage, and bric-a-brac
  • Neon Museum (Muzeum Neonów): Rescued neon signs from the communist era — an Instagram paradise. In the Soho Factory complex
  • Koneser Center: Former vodka factory, now a hip cultural center with the Museum of Polish Vodka (Muzeum Polskiej Wódki) — interactive exhibition with tasting!

★★ Palace of Culture (Pałac Kultury i Nauki)

The most controversial building in Poland: A 237-meter-high Stalinist skyscraper, built in 1955 as a "gift from the Soviet Union" — always perceived by the people of Warsaw as a symbol of occupation. The observation deck on the 30th floor (115m) offers the best panoramic view of the city. Amusing: The most popular viewpoint — because from here you can't see the palace.

Plac Defilad 1. Viewing terrace: 20 PLN (5€). Daily 10:00–20:00 (summer until 22:00).

★★ Warsaw's Rooftop Bar Scene

Warsaw has the most exciting bar scene in Poland. Some highlights:

  • The View Warsaw: Rooftop bar on the 33rd floor of the Marriott — panoramic view of the Palace of Culture and the skyline
  • Bar Studio: Legendary club in the Palace of Culture itself — cocktails with a view
  • Hala Koszyki: Historic market hall (1908), now a food hall with over 20 stalls and bars. This is where young Warsaw meets
  • Krakowskie Przedmieście at Night: The illuminated grand avenue with bars and cafés in baroque palaces

★★ Muzeum Powstania Warszawskiego (Museum of the Warsaw Uprising)

This museum tells the story of the Warsaw Uprising of 1944 — when the Polish Home Army fought against the German occupation for 63 days. 200,000 civilians died, and the city was systematically razed to the ground afterward. The exhibition is multimedia, poignant, and essential for understanding the city.

Ul. Grzybowska 79. 25 PLN (6€). Mon, Wed, Fri 8:00–18:00, Thu 8:00–20:00, Sat–Sun 10:00–18:00. Tue closed.
