Nightlife & Aperitivo
Rome's nightlife begins with the Aperitivo (6–8 PM) and goes on until the early morning hours — but unlike in Barcelona or Berlin. Rome is not a club city (though there are clubs), but a city of piazzas, terraces, and wine bars.
Aperitivo Culture
The Roman Aperitivo is more than a drink before dinner — it is a social ritual. Many bars offer a buffet with bruschetta, pasta, salads, and snacks with the drink (7–12€). In some bars, the Aperitivo buffet is so lavish that it replaces dinner.
- Trastevere: Piazza Trilussa and the surrounding bars are Rome's Aperitivo epicenter. Freni e Frizioni (in a former car workshop) has the most lavish buffet.
- Monti: Ai Tre Scalini at Piazza Madonna dei Monti — young crowd, good polpette, affordable drinks.
- Pigneto: Rome's alternative district (east of Termini) with craft bars, street art, and a scene reminiscent of Berlin neighborhoods.
The Nightlife Districts
- Trastevere: The epicenter — bars, trattorias, live music, street performers. Touristy, but irresistible.
- Monti: More chic and quieter than Trastevere — wine bars, cocktail bars, stylish crowd.
- San Lorenzo: University district near Sapienza — affordable bars, alternative, lively. Via dei Volsci is the main strip.
- Testaccio: Rome's club district — in the former slaughterhouse and the hills of ancient amphora shards (Monte Testaccio) are the larger clubs and live music venues.
- Ponte Milvio: In the north — popular with young Romans, elegant, with views of the Tiber.
