Sinis Peninsula, Tharros & Is Arutas★★

The Sinis Peninsula west of Oristano is one of Sardinia's best-kept secrets: a flat, wind-swept landscape of dunes, lagoons, and rice fields, reminiscent of the Camargue. Here, archaeology, nature, and geological wonders meet — and the tourist crowds stay away.

Tharros is one of the most fascinating archaeological sites in Sardinia: The Phoenician-Roman city (8th century BC–11th century AD) is located on a narrow promontory overlooking the sea on both sides. The remains include Phoenician temple complexes, Roman baths with mosaics, streets, cisterns, and columns — all against the backdrop of the deep blue sea and the Spanish watchtower Torre di San Giovanni on the hill above. At sunset, when the stones glow golden and the sea shimmers silver, Tharros is one of the most atmospheric archaeological sites in the Mediterranean.

The Spiaggia di Is Arutas is a geological wonder: Instead of sand, the beach is made up of tiny quartz grains in white, pink, green, and amber — smooth, luminous, and unique in Europe. The water is crystal clear and the bay framed by wind-swept rocks. Note: Taking the quartz grains is strictly prohibited (up to 3,000€ fine!) — the stocks have already suffered from souvenir collectors. Nearby is the Spiaggia di Maimoni with a similar quartz beach, but even less visited.

The Stagno di Cabras (Lagoon of Cabras) is one of Sardinia's most important wetlands: Flamingos, egrets, and hundreds of migratory bird species rest here. The town of Cabras houses the Museo Civico with the sensational Giants of Mont'e Prama — life-sized sandstone figures (2.5 m high) from the 9th–8th century BC, accidentally discovered in 1974 and representing the oldest large-format stone sculptures in the Mediterranean. The restored warriors, archers, and boxers are an archaeological sensation and worth the trip to Cabras alone.
