Practical: Reaching the Islands
Ferries
CalMac (Caledonian MacBrayne) operates all ferries to the western islands. The main connections:
- Skye: Skye Bridge (free, no ferry needed!) or ferry Mallaig–Armadale (30 min., summer)
- Outer Hebrides: Ullapool–Stornoway (Lewis, 2.5h), Uig (Skye)–Tarbert (Harris, 1.5h), Oban–Castlebay (Barra, 5h)
- Orkney: NorthLink Ferries: Scrabster–Stromness (90 min.), Aberdeen–Kirkwall (6h)
Booking Tip: Be sure to book ferries in advance during summer, especially for cars! CalMac is notorious for fully booked crossings in July/August.
Flights
Loganair flies from Edinburgh, Glasgow, and Inverness to most islands. Flights are short (30–60 min.) and offer spectacular views. Early bird prices from £50 one-way.
Island Hopping
CalMac offers Island Hopping Tickets — combined ferry passes for multiple islands at discounted prices. Perfect for an island tour. Allow plenty of buffer time — ferries are canceled in storms, especially in autumn and winter.
