Best Travel Time & Climate

Sweden spans 13 degrees of latitude — the climate in the south is mild-oceanic, in the north subarctic. The travel time strongly depends on your interests.

Summer: June – August (High Season)

The best travel time for most visitors. Long days (Midnight Sun north of the Arctic Circle!), pleasant temperatures (18–25°C in the south, 12–20°C in the north), all hiking trails and archipelago islands accessible. Midsommar (late June) is the highlight. Downside: High season with the highest prices, mosquitoes in Lapland (June/July).

Autumn: September – October

Insider tip! Autumn colors in the forests of Småland and the fjälls of Lapland, fewer tourists, cheaper prices. From September, the Northern Lights season begins. Stockholm and Gothenburg are particularly atmospheric in autumn with cultural events and a cozy fika atmosphere.

Winter: November – March

Northern Lights, ICEHOTEL, dog sledding, skiing, snowmobile tours. Stockholm in the snow with Christmas markets on Stortorget. In Lapland, there is polar night with only a few hours of blue twilight — and therefore spectacular Aurora nights. Downside: Short days in the south (6 hours of daylight in Stockholm in December).

Spring: April – May

Stockholm's parks bloom, the days become rapidly longer (up to 18 hours of daylight in May), the archipelago season begins. In Lapland, there is still snow — skiing and Northern Lights in the last week of March are an insider tip.

💡 Tipp

The golden rule: For Stockholm and the archipelago June–August, for Northern Lights and ICEHOTEL December–March, for Midsommar late June, for cheaper prices May and September. Sweden in summer and Sweden in winter are two completely different experiences — those who can, come twice.
