Four Languages & 26 Cantons

Switzerland is a four-language state — and it works because the country is consistently federalist in its organization. Each of the 26 cantons has extensive autonomy: its own tax rates, its own school system, its own police. The federal government (the Federal Council) consists of only 7 members, representing all governing parties — no opposition in the German sense.

The "Röstigraben"

The language border between German-speaking and Western Switzerland is jokingly called the Röstigraben — after the potato dish that is ubiquitous in German-speaking Switzerland but does not exist in Romandy. The divide is real: In referendums, Romandy often votes differently than German-speaking Switzerland, and cultural and mental differences are noticeable. But mutual respect is great — and the willingness to compromise is the foundation of the Swiss success model.

Punctuality & Quality Awareness

The Swiss take punctuality deadly seriously: A train that is 3 minutes late is considered a scandal. Appointments are binding, schedules are adhered to. This quality awareness extends to everything — from cheese to watches to public transport. It can seem exhausting to outsiders, but it is the reason why everything works in Switzerland.

High Quality of Life

Switzerland regularly ranks at the top of international quality of life rankings: Zurich and Geneva are among the most livable cities in the world. Wages are the highest in Europe (average 6,500 CHF/month), but the costs are correspondingly high: rents, food, and health insurance are very expensive. Switzerland is one of the safest countries in the world — crime rates are minimal.
