Costs & Budget

Let's be honest: Switzerland is one of the most expensive travel destinations in the world. Zurich and Geneva are among the most expensive cities anywhere. But with the right strategies, you can have a fantastic vacation even on a smaller budget.

Savings Tips

  • Swiss Travel Pass: The magic solution for travelers — all trains, buses, boats + over 500 museums included, 25–50% on mountain railways. Almost always pays off from 3+ days. From 244 CHF (4 days).
  • Half-Fare Card: If you stay longer — 185 CHF for a year, 50% on almost all trains and mountain railways. Pays off from the 4th ride!
  • Supersaver Tickets: SBB saver tickets with up to 50% discount, limited availability, non-refundable. Book 2–4 weeks in advance.
  • Migros & Coop: Shopping in these supermarkets instead of eating out saves 60–70%. Migros is slightly cheaper than Coop.
  • Drinking Water: Swiss tap water is excellent — buying bottles is unnecessary. The public fountains in cities and villages are also drinkable!
  • Free Museums: The Swiss Travel Pass includes over 500 museums. Even without it: Many museums have a free day per month.
  • Camping: Switzerland has excellent campsites (20–40 CHF/night for 2 people) — in stunning locations by lakes and mountains.

Achtung

Switzerland often accepts the Euro but gives change in CHF — at a poor rate. Always pay in Swiss Francs (CHF), preferably by credit card (Visa/Mastercard accepted everywhere). Withdrawing CHF at ATMs is cheaper than exchange offices.
