Predjama Castle

There are castles, and then there is Predjama Castle (Predjamski grad) — a castle built directly into a 123-meter-high cliff that looks as if it were invented by a fantasy author. Since the 13th century, it has defiantly hung in the cliff, half structure, half rock, and there is no other building of its kind in the world. The Guinness Book of Records lists it as the largest cave castle in the world.

History: Robber Baron Erasmus

The most famous episode comes from the 15th century: The robber baron Erasmus of Lueg (Erazem Predjamski) entrenched himself in the castle and withstood a months-long siege by imperial troops. His secret: A hidden passage through the cave behind the castle connected him to the outside world. He is said to have mocked his besiegers by throwing down fresh cherries and roasted oxen — proof that the siege was pointless. In the end, he was betrayed: A servant signaled the besiegers when Erasmus used the toilet (the most exposed part of the castle) — and a stone projectile hit him there.

Visiting

The castle houses a museum with weapons, armor, and the history of Erasmus. The rooms are partly carved directly into the rock — you can see where the stone ends and the masonry begins. In summer (June–September), the caves beneath the castle are also open for visits (bat colonies!). In July, the knight tournament (Erazmov viteški turnir) takes place — a medieval festival with mock battles, feasting, and a medieval market.

Castle entrance: €16.90. Combo ticket with Postojna Cave: €40.90. The combination of Postojna + Predjama is one of the best day trips in Slovenia — both attractions are only 9 km apart.
