Football — Religion, Identity, Passion

Football in Spain is not a sport but an identity. The rivalries are older and deeper than mere sporting competition — they reflect the political and regional tensions of the country.

El Clásico — more than a game

The duel between FC Barcelona and Real Madrid is the most-watched club sporting event in the world (over 650 million viewers). It is about much more than goals: Barça sees itself as a representative of Catalonia against centralist Madrid. Under Franco, FC Barcelona was a bastion of Catalan identity — attending matches at Camp Nou was the only legal forum where Catalan could be spoken. Real Madrid was considered (not entirely unjustly) as "Franco's team".

From 2025, Barça will play in the renovated Spotify Camp Nou with over 100,000 seats — the largest stadium in Europe.

The Spanish League (La Liga)

Besides the giants, there are passionate clubs with loyal fans:

  • Atlético Madrid — the working-class club of the capital, a counterpoint to the "royal" Real
  • Athletic Club Bilbao — a uniqueness in world football: relies exclusively on players of Basque origin. Has never been relegated
  • Real Betis Sevilla — the most passionate fans in Spain (Béticos). The derby against FC Sevilla is pure emotion
  • Real Sociedad (San Sebastián) — the other Basque club, with a modern playing style and a great stadium right by the sea

The Selección

The Spanish national team dominated world football from 2008 to 2012: Euro 2008, World Cup 2010, Euro 2012 — a historic triple triumph. "Tiki-Taka" (short passing, ball possession) became synonymous with Spanish football.

Attending a game

Tickets for Real Madrid or FC Barcelona can be obtained through the official websites (from around €50–100 for league games, El Clásico significantly more expensive). Cheaper and more authentic: matches of second or third division teams — the atmosphere in a stadium in Cádiz, Oviedo, or Racing Santander is priceless.

💡 Tipp

For a genuine football experience: Go to a bar (not the stadium!) and watch a big game with the locals. The atmosphere during an El Clásico in a bar in the old town is unforgettable — cheers, curses, collective euphoria.
