Flights to Sri Lanka
Sri Lanka's only international airport is the Bandaranaike International Airport (CMB) in Katunayake, about 35 km north of Colombo. Coordinates: [7.1808, 79.8841].
Direct Flights from the DACH Region
There are no nonstop flights from Germany, Austria, or Switzerland. The best connecting flights:
- SriLankan Airlines: Via Colombo from various hubs. The national airline offers the best connection.
- Emirates: Via Dubai (3–4h layover). Often the most comfortable option, from 450 €.
- Qatar Airways: Via Doha. Excellent service, from 420 €.
- Turkish Airlines: Via Istanbul. Many German departure airports, from 400 €.
- Oman Air: Via Muscat. Occasionally bargains from 350 €.
- Condor/Eurowings: Seasonal from Frankfurt, often via stopover.

Flight Duration
The pure flight time is about 9.5–10.5 hours. With a layover, expect 12–16 hours total travel time. Night flights via Dubai or Doha are ideal: Depart in the evening from Germany, arrive in Colombo in the morning.
Transfer from the Airport
- Taxi: Official prepaid taxi at the counter in the arrival hall. Colombo: 3,500–4,500 LKR (~10–13 €), Negombo: 1,500–2,500 LKR (~4–7 €). No surprises.
- Pick-up by hotel/driver: Most hotels and guesthouses offer pick-up — often the most stress-free option after a long flight.
- Bus: Line 187 to Colombo (Bastian Mawatha), 150 LKR (~0.43 €). Only for the hardiest budget travelers.
Tipp
Book flights 8–12 weeks in advance. The cheapest connections are often via Gulf airlines (Emirates, Qatar, Oman Air). Set up a Skyscanner price alert and use flexible dates of ±3 days.
Achtung
The CMB airport is located in Katunayake, NOT in Colombo. The drive to Colombo takes 1–2 hours depending on traffic. If heading to the highlands the next day, it's better to stay overnight in Negombo (15 minutes from the airport) than in Colombo.
Train travel — Sri Lanka's highlight
Sri Lanka's railway is an experience in itself — slow, authentic, and with some of the most spectacular railway routes in the world. The rail network was built by the British in the 19th century to transport tea from the highlands to the port in Colombo. Today, trains with open doors and windows wind through breathtaking landscapes.

Train Classes
- 1st Class (Observation): Air-conditioned, reserved seats, panoramic windows. Best for the Kandy–Ella route, BUT: The windows cannot be opened, and the glass is often foggy or dirty. Reservation needed weeks in advance!
- 2nd Class: Reserved seats, open windows (that's the advantage!), cheaper than 1st class. The best choice for photos and the authentic experience. Pre-booking is a must.
- 3rd Class: No reservation, free seating, extremely cheap. Can get very crowded — but that's part of the charm. Just show up and hop on.
Booking
Online via 12go.asia (surcharge ~500 LKR) or seatreservation.railway.gov.lk (official, 30 days in advance). The Kandy–Ella route is fully booked for weeks during the high season (Dec–Mar) — reserve as early as possible!
Tipp
For the Kandy–Ella route, book 2nd class and sit on the right side in the direction of travel — here you have a better view of the tea plantations and valleys. Open windows are better than the air-conditioned 1st class because you can enjoy the fresh mountain air and the sounds.
Achtung
Never sit in the open door of the train with your legs hanging out — as tempting as it looks on Instagram. Serious accidents happen every year. The tracks often run directly along steep cliffs.
Tuk-Tuks — the national vehicle
The Tuk-Tuk (three-wheeled motor rickshaw) is Sri Lanka's ubiquitous mode of transport. In every city, every village, on every corner, there's at least one. Small, loud, agile, and surprisingly fast — a ride in a tuk-tuk is as much a part of the Sri Lanka experience as Rice & Curry.
Prices
Official tariffs exist (taximeter), but are rarely used. Negotiation is the norm:

Tips for Tuk-Tuk Rides
- Always negotiate beforehand! Agree on the price before you get in. No taximeter = no surprises at the end.
- Pick Me App: Sri Lanka's Uber alternative. Works in Colombo, Kandy, Galle, and other cities. Fixed prices, no negotiation needed.
- Tuk-Tuk for longer tours: Renting a tuk-tuk for a whole day is a fantastic way to explore an area. Many drivers are excellent guides who know hidden temples and local restaurants.
Tipp
The "PickMe" app works like Uber and shows fair fixed prices — perfect for getting a feel for the right price level, even if you end up negotiating with a tuk-tuk driver on the street.
Buses — cheap and everywhere
Sri Lanka's bus network is dense, cheap, and chaotic. There is hardly a place on the island that is not accessible by bus. The ride is an experience: loud music, wild overtaking maneuvers, friendly fellow travelers, and a pinch of adrenaline.

Achtung
Sri Lanka's buses are notorious for fast driving and daring overtaking maneuvers. The accident statistics are worrying. Try not to sit in the front row and hold on tight. On mountain routes (Kandy–Nuwara Eliya), the ride can be nerve-wracking even for experienced travelers.
Rental car with driver
The by far most comfortable and popular way to travel around Sri Lanka is by car with a private driver. It sounds luxurious, but it's surprisingly affordable and the norm in Sri Lanka — even for budget travelers.
Why a Driver?
- The Traffic: Sri Lanka's roads are chaotic — left-hand traffic, narrow mountain roads, cows on the road, wild overtaking maneuvers. Driving yourself is pure stress.
- Flexibility: Unlike buses and trains, you determine the pace, route, and stops. Want to stop spontaneously at a waterfall? No problem.
- Local Knowledge: Good drivers are also guides — they know hidden temples, the best local restaurants, and can negotiate tuk-tuk prices and entrance fees for you.

The prices include driver, fuel, and driver accommodation. The driver stays in simple accommodations, often provided by the hotel. Tip at the end of the trip: 1,000–2,000 LKR (3–6 €) per day is common and appropriate.
Booking
Through hotels, travel agencies, or online platforms. Recommendation: Research in advance and find a reliable driver through review portals. Many travelers book their driver for the entire round trip (10–14 days).
Tipp
A driver for the entire round trip (e.g., 10 days) is cheaper than daily individual bookings. Plan the route together with the driver — he knows how long the routes really take (Google Maps significantly underestimates travel times in Sri Lanka).
