Sunrise on the Lion Rock Sigiriya — The 200-meter-high rock fortress from the 5th century towers over the jungle like a natural skyscraper. 1,200 steps lead through the lion's paws to the summit, where the ruins of an ancient palace and a 360-degree panorama over endless rainforest await. 2. Train ride from Kandy to Ella — The most famous railway line in Asia: Seven hours through emerald green tea plantations, over spectacular viaducts, through misty forests, and past roaring waterfalls. 4. Tea tasting in the highlands of Nuwara Eliya — Ceylon tea is world-famous, and here it grows: on lush green slopes at 1,800 meters altitude. Visit a tea factory, tasting, and walk through the plantations. Factory admission: 500 LKR (~1.40 €). → Chap. Highlands
5. Leopard Safari in Yala National Park — Yala has the highest leopard density in the world. In Block 1, the chances of a sighting are over 50%. Also, elephants, crocodiles, sloth bears, and hundreds of bird species. Half-day safari from 8,000 LKR (~23 €) plus park entrance. → Chap. South Coast
6. Galle Fort at sunset — The UNESCO-protected Dutch fortress at the southern tip of Sri Lanka is a time capsule: Colonial villas, boutique hotels, hip cafés, and the Indian Ocean on three sides. In the evening, stroll on the fortress walls and enjoy the sunset over the sea. → Chap. South Coast
7. Elephant Gathering in Minneriya — Between July and October, up to 300 wild elephants gather at the Minneriya reservoir — the largest elephant gathering in Asia. A natural spectacle like no other. Jeep safari from 6,000 LKR (~17 €). → Chap. Cultural Triangle
8. Nine Arches Bridge in Ella — The most iconic photo motif of Sri Lanka: A nine-arched stone bridge from the colonial era, nestled in tropical vegetation. Most spectacular when the blue train crosses the bridge (around 9:30 and 15:00). → Chap. Highlands
9. Cave Temples of Dambulla — Five caves full of centuries-old Buddha statues and ceiling paintings, high above the plain on a granite rock. 153 Buddha statues and over 2,000 square meters of painted ceilings — the largest and best-preserved cave temple in Sri Lanka. 10. Surfing in Arugam Bay — Sri Lanka's surf capital on the east coast attracts wave riders from all over the world from April to October. Sri Lanka is astonishingly compact — in just a few hours, you can switch from ancient ruins in the dry north to misty tea plantations in the highlands to golden beaches in the south. Four main regions, four completely different worlds:

The historical heart of Sri Lanka: Three UNESCO World Heritage Sites in close proximity. Sigiriya, Dambulla, Polonnaruwa, Anuradhapura, and the royal city of Kandy with the sacred Temple of the Tooth. Plus, the Minneriya National Park with the legendary elephant gathering. Plan at least 4–5 days.

🏔️ Highlands

For whom: Nature lovers, hikers, tea enthusiasts
Cool mountain air instead of tropical humidity: Ella with the Nine Arches Bridge and Little Adam's Peak, Nuwara Eliya amidst endless tea plantations, the Horton Plains with the breathtaking World's End, and the legendary train ride through the mountains. Adam's Peak for pilgrims and adventurers.

🏖️ South Coast

For whom: Beachgoers, wildlife fans, culture travelers
The main tourist route: Galle Fort, the bathing beaches of Unawatuna and Mirissa, whale watching, the wild Yala National Park with leopards, and the Udawalawe National Park with elephant herds. From November to April, the best region.

🌊 West & East Coast

For whom: Surfers, explorers, city travelers
Colombo as the vibrant capital, Negombo as a beach location near the airport, Arugam Bay as a surf paradise on the east coast, Trincomalee with its beaches and temples, and the little-visited north around Jaffna with its fascinating Tamil culture.

Sri Lanka has a unique climate phenomenon: Two monsoons hit the island at different times and on different coasts. This means: There is always a region with perfect weather — you just need to know which one.

The Two Monsoons

• Southwest Monsoon (Yala): May – September — Hits the west and south coasts as well as the highlands. Heavy rains, rough seas on the west beaches. The east coast (Arugam Bay, Trincomalee) is dry and sunny then!
• Northeast Monsoon (Maha): October – January — Hits the east and north coasts. The south and west coasts remain largely dry and are then optimal. However: November/December can bring short showers everywhere (inter-monsoon phases).

🎒 Backpackers & Budget Travelers

Sri Lanka is significantly cheaper than most Asian alternatives. Hostels from 1,500 LKR (4 €), Rice & Curry for 500 LKR (1.40 €), Tuk-Tuk rides for a few hundred Rupees. The legendary train rides cost almost nothing (2nd class Kandy–Ella: 230 LKR / 0.65 €). You can live well on 10,000–15,000 LKR (28–42 €) per day.

👨‍👩‍👧‍👦 Families

Sri Lankans love children. Elephant safaris in Udawalawe delight all ages, the beaches of Unawatuna are shallow and safe, and the train ride through the highlands is an adventure for kids. Family-friendly guesthouses are available everywhere and are significantly cheaper than hotels.

💑 Couples & Honeymooners

Boutique hotels in Galle Fort, private villas on the south coast, Ayurveda retreats in the highlands — Sri Lanka offers romance at prices unimaginable in Europe. A candlelight dinner on the beach for 5,000 LKR (14 €), a couples massage for 3,000 LKR (8.50 €).
