Ppalli-Ppalli — Korea's Turbo Culture
"Ppalli ppalli!" (빨리 빨리, "Quick, quick!") is Korea's unofficial national motto — and explains much about the society. Koreans do everything quickly: eat quickly, work quickly, build quickly, drink quickly, deliver quickly. Impatience is embedded in the DNA.
This mentality has transformed Korea from an agricultural country to a high-tech nation in 50 years — but it also has a dark side: enormous pressure to perform, one of the highest working hours in the OECD, and a culture where slowness is seen as a weakness.
For travelers, Ppalli-Ppalli shows its positive side:
- Delivery service: Everything is delivered within minutes to hours — food, packages, even laundry. The app "Coupang" is Korea's Amazon with same-day delivery.
- Internet: South Korea has the fastest internet in the world — 5G everywhere, free Wi-Fi in every metro station, every bus, every café.
- Efficiency: Bureaucratic processes, doctor visits, restaurant service — everything is fast. Koreans don't understand why it takes three weeks to get a doctor's appointment in Germany.
