The Four Seasons

Spring (March–May): Cherry Blossoms & Hydrangeas

Spring brings pleasant temperatures and two spectacular blooming seasons: In March, the cherry trees bloom (especially in Alishan, Yangmingshan, and at Wuling Farm), in May, the hydrangeas bloom on Yangmingshan near Taipei. April can be wet, but May is often sunny and warm. The tea plantations in the mountains are in full green. A good compromise between weather, prices, and tourist density.

Summer (June–September): Typhoons & Night Market Nights

Hot, humid, and the typhoon season. Taipei regularly reaches 35–38°C with extreme humidity. From July to September, 3–5 typhoons per year hit Taiwan — some only as rain bands, others with full force. The government issues timely warnings and declares "typhoon days" (everything closes). Nevertheless, summer evenings at the night markets are magical, the beaches in Kenting are perfect, and the mountains offer a cool retreat. Accommodations are cheaper than in the fall.

Autumn (October–November): The Golden Time

The best travel time for Taiwan. The typhoon season is over, temperatures drop to a pleasant 20–28°C, humidity decreases, and the sky is clear. Perfect for hikes in the Taroko Gorge and in Alishan. Autumn also brings the best conditions for the Yushan ascent and the clearest view of the sunrise over the sea of clouds.

Winter (December–February): Mild in the South, Damp in the North

Taiwan's winter is mild, but Taipei can be surprisingly uncomfortable: 12–18°C, often rainy and gray, buildings have no heating. The south (Tainan, Kaohsiung, Kenting) remains pleasantly warm at 18–26°C. Occasionally, snow falls in the mountains. The Chinese New Year (usually late January/early February) is the busiest travel time — trains are fully booked, prices are high, many shops are closed.

💡 Tipp

October and November are the golden months: pleasantly warm, little rain, no typhoons, and significantly fewer tourists than in summer. Those who want to hike in the mountains (Taroko, Yushan, Alishan) will find the clearest air and the most beautiful light now.
