Climate Overview
Taiwan stretches from the Tropic of Cancer across the middle of the island — the north is subtropical, the south tropical. The central mountain range (over 200 peaks above 3,000 m) divides the island into a humid east side and a drier west side. Therefore, the weather can vary greatly depending on the region.
| Region | Spring (Mar–May) | Summer (Jun–Sep) | Autumn (Oct–Nov) | Winter (Dec–Feb) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Taipei & North | 18–28°C, variable | 28–38°C, humid, typhoons | 20–28°C, ideal | 12–20°C, often rainy |
| Taichung/Central | 20–30°C, sunny | 26–35°C, afternoon rain | 22–30°C, dry | 15–24°C, mild |
| Tainan/South | 22–32°C, sunny | 27–35°C, humid | 24–30°C, warm | 18–26°C, pleasant |
| Mountains (>2,000 m) | 8–18°C | 12–22°C | 8–18°C | 0–12°C, frost possible |
The decisive factor is the humidity: In summer, it is 80–90% in Taipei — combined with 35°C, it feels like a sauna. In autumn, the humidity drops significantly, and the air becomes clear and pleasant.
