Climate Overview
Tenerife's climate is unique: The island has more microclimates than any other comparable spot on earth. On just 2,034 km², you can find semi-deserts, subtropical forests, alpine lunar landscapes, and temperate coastal strips. The reason: Mount Teide (3,715 m) divides the island into two climatically completely different halves.

Water temperature: Year-round 19–24°C — the Canary Current keeps the sea pleasantly cool. In comparison: The Mediterranean is significantly colder in winter at 14°C.
The Mar de Nubes (Sea of Clouds): A fascinating phenomenon: The trade winds push moist air against the north side of the island, creating a cloud layer at about 800–1,500 m altitude. The south lies below these clouds in the sun, the north above or below in the shade. From Teide, you look over an endless white sea of clouds — one of the most spectacular sights of the island.
Seasons in Tenerife
Spring (March–May): Sea of Flowers & Perfect Hiking Weather
Spring is the most beautiful time for nature lovers. The island explodes in colors: wildflowers, blooming almond trees, and the spectacular Tajinaste rojo (Tower of Jewels), a red flowering plant up to 3 meters high that grows only in Tenerife and blooms in May/June in the Teide National Park. Temperatures: a pleasant 20–25°C, ideal for hiking. Less touristy than winter.
Summer (June–September): Beach & Heat
Summer brings the highest temperatures, especially in the south (up to 35°C, rarely below 20°C at night). Ideal time for beach holidays, water sports, and whale watching. In the north, it is more pleasant (22–28°C). Beware of Calima: Occasionally, the hot Saharan wind brings temperatures over 40°C and dust — usually only 2–3 days, but unpleasant.
Autumn (October–November): Indian Summer
Perfect combination of warm sea (23–24°C — the warmest water temperature of the year!), mild temperatures, and the first rain showers that make the north green again. Fewer tourists, lower prices, and excellent light for photography.
Winter (December–February): Escape from the German Winter
The peak season in Tenerife. While Germany freezes, the south enjoys 20–24°C and sunshine. In the north, it is milder and occasionally rainy — but green and lush. Snow can lie on Teide! The carnival in February/March is the cultural highlight. Hotels and flights are most expensive during this time.

The best travel time for hikers: March–May and October–November. For a beach holiday: June–September (south). For the best compromise between weather, prices, and atmosphere: May or October.

Conclusion: Tenerife is a true year-round destination. Even in the coldest month (January), the south has more sunshine hours than most European destinations in summer. The island always works — it just depends on what you want to do.
