Hikes in the Center
Besides the Teide National Park, the center of the island offers great hikes through Canarian pine forests (Pinus canariensis) — an endemic pine species that only grows in the Canaries and whose long needles comb the trade wind clouds, thus regulating the island's water balance.
Top Hikes
- Roques de García Loop: The classic in the national park. 3.5 km, 1.5 hours, easy. Past the famous rock formations with views of Teide. Suitable for all fitness levels.
- Montaña Blanca → Refugio Altavista: For ambitious hikers. 8 km, 4–5h ascent. From the plateau through lava fields to the refuge at 3,260 m. Overnight stay possible (sunrise tour!).
- Paisaje Lunar from Vilaflor: 10 km (round trip), 3–4h, medium. Through pine forest to the surreal white pumice formations of the "lunar landscape." Start at the highest village in the Canaries.
- Chinyero Volcano: Loop around Tenerife's youngest volcanic crater (last eruption 1909). 4 km, 1.5h, easy. Black lava fields, Canarian pines, and a young volcanic landscape that shows how dynamic this island is.
- Siete Cañadas: Crossing the crater floor from Roques de García to Montaña Blanca. 16 km, 5–6h, medium. The most comprehensive hike through the crater — lava flows, pumice fields, volcanic needles, and always Teide in view.
Practical Tips
The altitude (2,000–3,700 m) should not be underestimated: The UV radiation is extreme (sunscreen factor 50+!), the air is thin, and temperatures can drop to 0°C at night even in summer. During the day, it can be 25°C — dress in layers. Bring enough water (at least 2 liters per person), there are no water sources in the park.
Achtung
The altitude of over 2,000 m can cause symptoms of altitude sickness in sensitive individuals: headaches, nausea, dizziness. People with cardiovascular problems or pregnant women should seek medical advice before taking the cable car. At the first symptoms: descend immediately.
