The floating markets (Talat Nam) are an iconic image of Thailand — wooden boats loaded with tropical fruits, noodle soups cooked on swaying kitchen boats, and vendors with wide-brimmed straw hats handing their goods over the water. Once, the entire canal system of Bangkok (the "Khlongs") was a huge floating marketplace — today, most markets are tourist attractions, but some still retain a genuine atmosphere.

The most famous is the Damnoen Saduak Floating Market, about 100 km southwest of Bangkok in Ratchaburi Province. The market is colorful, photogenic, and — honestly — entirely geared towards tourists. Prices are inflated, boats move in traffic jams, and the "authenticity" is staged. Nevertheless: The experience of gliding through the canals on a narrow longtail boat and buying fried bananas directly from the neighboring boat has its charm. If you go, you should be there before 9 AM (start from 7 AM), before the tourist buses arrive.

The much better alternative is the Amphawa Floating Market, 50 km southwest. Amphawa only opens on weekends (Friday-Sunday, 3-9 PM) and mainly attracts Thai visitors. Instead of kitschy souvenirs, there is excellent seafood: grilled giant prawns (Kung Pao), fried clams, squid — prepared directly on the boats and eaten on the canal bank. In the evening, boats offer firefly tours through the surrounding khlongs — a magical experience in the darkness.

Within Bangkok, the Khlong Lat Mayom is the most authentic floating market. Only 20 minutes from the city center (taxi or Grab), it opens on Saturdays and Sundays from 9 AM and is almost exclusively visited by locals. Thai desserts, fresh fruit, handmade shrimp pastes — and not a single elephant pants stand. Here you eat what Thais eat, at Thai prices.

💡 Tipp

Avoid the overpriced tours from Khao San Road (1,500-2,000 THB). Better: Take the van from Victory Monument to Amphawa (80 THB, 90 min.) and stay overnight in one of the charming canal homestays (from 600 THB). The next morning, you can visit the Mae Klong Railway Market (Talat Rom Hub) — the market where the stalls are folded away when the train passes through (only 8 km away).
