The Monarchy in Society

The Thai monarchy is not comparable to European royal families. The king stands at the top of a hierarchy that combines religious, cultural, and political dimensions. His image hangs in every household, every business, every classroom.

Omnipresent Reverence

Before every movie, the royal anthem is played — everyone stands up. In the morning and evening at 8:00 and 18:00, the national anthem is played from loudspeakers in parks, train stations, and public buildings — everyone stands still. The king's birthday is a national holiday, the queen's is Mother's Day. Yellow shirts (the king's color, after his birthday Monday) and blue shirts (the queen's color) are worn en masse on these days.

Lèse-majesté in Everyday Life

The lèse-majesté law (Article 112) is not a dead letter. Between 2020 and 2024, hundreds of people were charged, including youths and activists. Anyone — neighbors, taxi drivers, hotel staff — can file a complaint. Even sharing an article on social media can lead to arrest.

For tourists, this means: Absolute restraint. No jokes, no comments, no discussions about the royal family. Not even under seemingly confidential circumstances — you never know who is listening.

Achtung

The lèse-majesté law also applies to digital communication. A critical Facebook post, a shared link, an unconsidered comment — all of this can lead to charges in Thailand. Even a VPN does not protect if the authorities are determined. Absolute discretion is mandatory.
