The Four Seasons
Spring (March–May): The Great Awakening
Spring arrives early and quickly. From mid-March, almond trees bloom at Lake Balaton, in April the fruit trees explode in full bloom, and the vines sprout. Temperatures: 10–22°C, often sunny, but rainy days possible. The thermal baths are delightful, the tourist crowds still distant. Highlights: Budapest Spring Festival (April), lavender bloom at Lake Balaton (June), Easter traditions in the countryside.
Summer (June–August): Balaton Season & Festivals
The peak season — and rightly so. 25–35°C, endless sunny days, Lake Balaton reaches a bathtub-warm 27°C, and the whole country celebrates. Budapest can become extremely humid in July and August (35°C+ is not uncommon). The shoulder season is better for the capital, while summer is ideal for Lake Balaton. Highlights: Sziget Festival (August), Balaton Sound, open-air concerts, wine festivals.
Autumn (September–October): Grape Harvest & Golden Light
Perhaps the most beautiful travel time. 15–25°C in September, golden light over the vineyards, grape harvest in Tokaj and Eger, fewer tourists, falling prices. The Puszta shines in warm colors, Budapest is pleasant and lively. Highlights: Harvest festivals (szüret), Budapest Wine Week, autumn markets, paprika harvest in Kalocsa.
Winter (November–March): Thermal Baths & Advent Magic
Cold, gray winters with occasional snow — but that's precisely what makes it appealing: Sitting in a steaming thermal bath while snowflakes fall outside is one of Hungary's most magical experiences. Budapest during Advent is a dream: Christmas markets on Vörösmarty Square, mulled wine, Kürtőskalács (chimney cake). Highlights: Advent markets, thermal baths in the snow, cheapest prices of the year.
💡 Tipp
The best travel time for first-time visitors: September and October. Pleasant temperatures, grape harvest, few tourists, affordable prices, and golden light — the perfect combination.
