Overview of Regions

Uzbekistan can be divided into four major travel regions:

Tashkent

For whom: City explorers, Soviet architecture fans, foodies
The capital is the modern face of Uzbekistan — an exciting mix of Soviet monumental architecture, oriental bazaars, hipster cafes, and one of the most beautiful subways in the world. Tashkent is the starting and ending point of any Uzbekistan journey.

Samarkand

For whom: History lovers, architecture enthusiasts, photographers
The pearl of the Silk Road and Timur's capital. Registan Square, the Gur-Emir Mausoleum, and the Bibi-Khanum Mosque are part of the UNESCO World Heritage and count among the most impressive structures in Central Asia.

Bukhara

For whom: Cultural travelers, mosque lovers, bazaar strollers
The "holy city" with over 140 historic buildings in a compact area. The old town is a UNESCO World Heritage — a living open-air museum with mosques, madrasas, minarets, and the most atmospheric trading domes in Central Asia.

Khiva

For whom: Time travelers, adventurers, desert romantics
The perfectly preserved desert city on the edge of the Karakum Desert. The inner city Ichan Kala is a UNESCO World Heritage site and feels like a film set from another era — city walls, minarets, palaces, and a silence not found in Samarkand and Bukhara.
