Climate Overview
Vienna has a continental climate with warm summers and cold winters — slightly warmer than Berlin, but colder than Munich due to the Pannonia Plain in the east. The Viennese Föhn can bring warm phases in spring and autumn.

Important: Viennese summers can become surprisingly hot — 35–38°C are no longer uncommon in July/August. The heat islands in the Inner City are particularly noticeable then. Rescue: Donauinsel, Alte Donau, and the parks.
The Four Seasons
Spring (April–May): The Ideal Travel Time
Vienna in spring is a dream: 15–22°C, blooming cherry trees in the Stadtpark, the Schanigärten (terraces) open, the Prater turns green, and the Heurigen start their season. The ideal time for sightseeing — pleasant temperatures, moderate prices, and the city in full bloom.
Summer (June–August): Hot and Lively
High season: 25–35°C (heatwaves over 38°C possible), long days, open-air cinemas, Donauinsel Festival (Europe's largest open-air festival, late June, free!) and concerts in the Rathaus Park. The Viennese escape to the Alte Donau or the mountain forests. Tip: Museums in the morning, swimming in the afternoon, Heurigen or open-air concerts in the evening.
Autumn (September–October): Golden Autumn
The second-best travel time: 14–22°C, golden light in the Prater, grape harvest in the Viennese vineyards (Sturm — the fresh must — is available everywhere!), fewer tourists and the start of the concert season. October is perfect for visiting Heurigen — new wine, chestnuts, and autumn colors.
Winter (November–March): Viennese Advent & Ball Season
The Viennese winter has a special charm: The Christkindl markets (from mid-November) in front of the Rathaus, at Spittelberg, and in front of Schönbrunn Palace are legendary. Punch instead of mulled wine, chestnut roasters on every corner, and the ball season (January–February) with the highlight: the Vienna Opera Ball. The cold (-2 to +5°C) is compensated by the atmosphere.
Tipp
The absolute best time to visit is May or September: pleasant temperatures, fewer tourists, and the most beautiful light. In May, the gardens of Schönbrunn bloom, and in September, there's Sturm (fresh must) and a harvest atmosphere at the Heurigen.

Conclusion: Vienna is a year-round destination. Spring and autumn offer the best overall package, summer the liveliest leisure program, winter the most magical atmosphere and the ball season. Vienna has no dead month — the cultural scene is in full swing from September to June, and in summer, the open-air program takes over.
