Limassol

Limassol is the cosmopolitan coastal city of Cyprus with a lively promenade, medieval castle, and top-notch wineries in the hinterland. The second-largest city on the island combines beach life with urban flair and Mediterranean tranquility. In summer, the pebble beaches and beach bars attract visitors, while in winter, the nearby Troodos Mountains invite for hiking.

Nicosia

Nicosia (Greek Lefkosia, Turkish Lefkosa) is the last divided capital in the world — a Green Line (UN buffer zone) has divided the city since 1974 into a Greek-Cypriot south and a Turkish-Cypriot north. This unique status makes Nicosia fascinating: In one day, you can have breakfast and dinner in two cultures, two currencies, and two culinary worlds. The old town within the Venetian fortress walls (perfect circle with eleven bastions, built in 1567) houses both sides: In the south, the Faneromeni Church, the Leventis Museum, and the Laiki Geitonia (restored old town alleys). In the north, the Selimiye Mosque (formerly Gothic St. Sophia Cathedral, 1209), the Buyuk Han (Ottoman caravanserai), and the bustling Arasta Bazaar. The border crossing at Ledra Street in the pedestrian zone allows you to switch between worlds in seconds — a surreal experience. On the Greek side, Halloumi cheese and Commandaria wine; on the Turkish side, Lahmacun and Turkish coffee. Nicosia outside the walls is a modern Mediterranean city with shopping centers, nightlife, and an emerging food scene.

Paphos

Paphos is the mythological cradle of love — the place on the west coast of Cyprus where Aphrodite, the Greek goddess of beauty and love, is said to have emerged from the foam of the sea. This small coastal town combines 9,000 years of civilization history, a vast archaeological park with world-renowned Roman mosaics, and the mild, sun-drenched climate of the eastern Mediterranean. The Archaeological Park of Kato Paphos (UNESCO World Heritage) is one of the most impressive open-air museums in the Mediterranean: The houses of Dionysus, Theseus, Aion, and Orpheus house Roman floor mosaics from the 3rd to 5th centuries AD, which are among the most beautiful in the ancient world in terms of preservation and artistic quality. The Tombs of the Kings in Nea Paphos are tomb complexes carved into the limestone cliffs from the 3rd century BC, featuring peristyle courtyards and Doric columns, reminiscent of an underground Greek city. They are particularly spectacular in the late afternoon hours when the light turns the limestone cliffs golden. The Rock of Aphrodite (Petra tou Romiou) lies 25 km to the east on a dramatic coastline: Massive limestone cliffs rise from the turquoise sea, and at sunset, it becomes clear why the ancient Greeks chose this place as the birthplace of love. The harbor of Paphos with the medieval castle is the heart of the evening life: Restaurants line the promenade, and the castle serves as a backdrop for the Paphos Aphrodite Festival with operas under the stars in summer.

Islands

Cyprus

Cyprus is the island where Aphrodite is said to have emerged from the sea — and when you see Petra tou Romiou on the southern coast, where shimmering water washes over white pebbles and bizarre rocks rise from the surf, you immediately understand the myth. The third-largest island in the Mediterranean combines 10,000 years of history, 340 sunny days a year, golden beaches, a wild mountain range, and a cuisine that merges Greek and oriental flavors on just 9,251 square kilometers. Paphos on the west coast is a UNESCO World Heritage site: The Archaeological Park with the Roman mosaics of the houses of Dionysus, Theseus, and Aion showcases some of the best-preserved floor mosaics in the entire Mediterranean. The Tombs of the Kings, rock-hewn burial chambers from the 3rd century BC, form a necropolis with underground atriums and Doric columns right by the sea. The Troodos Mountains in the interior rise to 1,952 meters (Olympos) and present a completely different world from the coast: pine and cedar forests, stone villages with vineyards, and ten Byzantine church-roofed churches that preserve UNESCO-protected frescoes from the 11th to 16th centuries. In winter, it even snows here, and there is a small ski lift on Olympos. Ayia Napa and Protaras on the east coast offer the most beautiful beaches on the island: Nissi Beach, with its turquoise water and white sand, is one of the most famous beaches in Europe. Ayia Napa has also established itself as the party capital of the eastern Mediterranean, with dozens of clubs and bars along the promenade. Nicosia (Lefkosia) is the last divided capital in the world: The Venetian old town with Ledra Street as a pedestrian crossing between the Greek south and the Turkish north is a fascinating piece of living history. Within the circular Venetian city walls, Ottoman mosques, Gothic cathedrals, and trendy cafes mix.
