Baksheesh (Tipping)
Baksheesh (بقشيش) is not optional in Egypt — it is an integral part of the culture and economy. Many service workers (porters, toilet attendants, parking attendants) earn the majority of their income through tips. What may seem like begging is an established compensation system.
Baksheesh Guide
| Situation | Amount |
|---|---|
| Porter (hotel, airport) | 20–50 LE |
| Housekeeping (per day) | 20–50 LE |
| Restaurant waiter | 10–15% of the bill |
| Taxi driver | Round up or 10% |
| Toilet attendant | 5–10 LE |
| Guide (half-day) | 100–200 LE |
| Guide (full-day) | 200–400 LE |
| Felucca captain | 50–100 LE |
| Mosque attendant (who keeps your shoes) | 10–20 LE |
| Someone who "helps" you unsolicited | 0–10 LE (only if you actually wanted the help) |
Tip: Always keep a supply of small bills (5, 10, 20 LE). Exchange money in advance and keep the small bills separately in your pocket — so you don't have to open your wallet in front of the tip recipient.
