Brazilian Side, San Ignacio Miní & Puerto Iguazú
★★★ Brazilian Side — The Panorama
The Brazilian side offers what the Argentine side lacks: the panoramic view of the entire edge of the falls. You see all 275 cascades at once — a breathtaking widescreen natural cinema stretching over 2.7 km. If the Argentine side is the "in the midst," then the Brazilian side is the "overview."
A 1.5 km long panoramic trail runs along the gorge with various viewpoints. At the end: A walkway that juts directly into the mist of the Garganta del Diablo — the most dramatic position on the Brazilian side (you will get WET). The panoramic view from above of the entire falls system is the best photo you can take at Iguazú.
Argentine vs. Brazilian — The Comparison
| Aspect | Argentine Side | Brazilian Side |
|---|---|---|
| Experience | In the midst, up close, intense | Panorama, overview, photographic |
| Wetness Level | Completely soaked | Moderate to wet (walkway at the end) |
| Duration | Full day (6–8h) | Half day (2–3h is enough) |
| Walkways/Trails | Three circuits + boat | One panoramic trail |
| Garganta del Diablo | From above at the edge | From the side, walkway into the mist |
| Wildlife | More (larger park) | Less, but bird park next door |
| Recommendation | MUST-SEE (Day 1) | Highly recommended (Day 2, half day) |
Border Crossing: As an EU citizen no visa for Brazil is required (up to 90 days). Bring your passport! Buses run regularly from Puerto Iguazú (AR) to Foz do Iguaçu (BR) over the international bridge (approx. 30 min., 2,000 ARS). Taxi/Uber also possible (approx. 8,000 ARS). Note: Time change — Brazil is 1 hour ahead of Argentina!
★★ Ruinas de San Ignacio Miní — The Jesuit Reductions
The best-preserved Jesuit reductions in Argentina (UNESCO World Heritage) are located 250 km southwest of Iguazú. In the 17th and 18th centuries, the Jesuits built a unique social utopia here: settlements for the indigenous Guaraní with their own administration, schools, workshops, and one of the most advanced societies of their time — while Spanish colonial rulers enslaved the indigenous people elsewhere.
The ruins of the reduction are impressive: The church (with elaborate stone carvings by the Guaraní), the workshops, the houses, and the plaza are partially reconstructed, partially overgrown by jungle — an atmospheric mix of Angkor Wat and European mission architecture. Known from the film "The Mission" (1986) with Robert De Niro and Jeremy Irons.
240 km from Puerto Iguazú (3h by car or bus). Entrance: approx. 5,000 ARS (approx. 4€). Daily 7:00–18:00. In the evening: impressive light and sound show (approx. 10,000 ARS, 20:00). Possible as a day tour from Puerto Iguazú — worth it if you have a third day!
★★ Hito Tres Fronteras (Three Borders Landmark)
At the confluence of the Río Iguazú and Río Paraná, three countries meet: Argentina, Brazil, and Paraguay. From the viewpoint in Puerto Iguazú (Av. Tres Fronteras), you can see the Brazilian and Paraguayan flags waving on the other side. Each country has its own viewpoint with a flag and monument. The Argentine one is the most beautiful — especially at sunset, when the sky turns red over three countries simultaneously.
3 km from the center of Puerto Iguazú. Free entry. Taxi approx. 2,000 ARS. Best to come at sunset.
