Mendoza — City & Bodegas

★★★ Mendoza — Wine Capital of Argentina

Mendoza is an oasis city at the foot of the Andes: wide, plane tree-lined boulevards, irrigation canals (Acequias, flowing through every street), a lively café culture, and over 300 sunny days a year. The city itself is relaxed and pedestrian-friendly — much quieter than Buenos Aires — but the real reason to come to Mendoza lies at its gates: over 1,500 bodegas in one of the best wine regions in the world.

Mendoza's viticulture owes its existence to the meltwaters of the Andes: In a region that is actually semi-desert (only 200 mm of rainfall per year!), the ancient irrigation canals of the Huarpe indigenous people (later expanded by the Spanish and Italians) transform the dry land into fertile vineyards. The combination of altitude (600–1,500 m), extreme sunlight (300+ sunny days), hot days, and cold nights (temperature difference up to 20°C!) makes Mendoza's Malbec unique: intensely fruity, smooth, deep red, and with a complexity that surpasses European wines in its price range.

💡 Tipp

Reserve bodegas 1–2 weeks in advance, especially Catena Zapata and Zuccardi! The best time of year: February–April (harvest time/Vendimia) — you can see the grape harvest live, and the atmosphere is festive. In March: Fiesta de la Vendimia (Argentina's largest wine festival!). Possible year-round, but in winter (Jun–Aug) some smaller bodegas are closed.

The Great Bodegas — Detailed Guide

★★★ Catena Zapata — The Pyramid

The most significant bodega in Argentina and the one that made Argentine Malbec internationally known. The winery is built as a Maya pyramid — a monumental building in the middle of the vineyards that can be seen from afar. The Catena family (of Italian descent) began elevating Malbec to world-class levels in the 1990s when the world still scoffed at Argentine wine. Today, Catena Zapata wines are among the 100 best wines in the world.

The tour leads through the cellars with oak barrels, the fermentation room with concrete eggs (an innovation by Catena), and the library of old vintages. The tasting (4–5 wines) is professional and educational. The "Angélica" restaurant offers a top-level lunch with wine pairing.

Cobos s/n, Agrelo, Luján de Cuyo. About 20 km south of Mendoza center. Tours: daily, in English and Spanish. From approx. 15,000 ARS (15€) for the standard tour. RESERVATION REQUIRED — at least 1–2 weeks in advance via catenawineries.com! Tip: The "Icon Tour" (approx. 40€) with tasting of the top wines (Adrianna Vineyard, Nicolás Catena Zapata) is worth every cent.

★★★ Zuccardi (Valle de Uco) — The Best Bodega in the World

Voted the best bodega in the world in 2023 (World's Best Vineyards)! The ultra-modern winery in Valle de Uco is an architectural masterpiece: concrete, glass, and stone blend with the landscape. The philosophy: terroir wines that reflect the soil — each vineyard, each plot is vinified separately. The result is wines of incredible complexity and finesse.

The Piedra Infinita Restaurant is one of the best in Argentina: A menu tailored to the wines, served in a dining room with panoramic views of the Andes. Reservation weeks in advance!

Ruta 89, Paraje Altamira, Valle de Uco. About 100 km south of Mendoza. Tour + tasting: from approx. 25,000 ARS (25€). Restaurant: menu from approx. 50,000 ARS (50€) with wine pairing. RESERVATION REQUIRED for tour AND restaurant!

★★★ Bodega Salentein — Art and Wine

Dutch-Argentine winery with a unique combination: world-class wine AND its own art museum (Killka) with rotating exhibitions of contemporary art. The main building is cross-shaped, with four separate fermentation rooms for four different grape varieties. The restaurant is excellent, the garden with views of the Andes Cordillera is beautiful.

Ruta 89 km 14, Los Arboles, Valle de Uco. Tour + tasting: from 10,000 ARS. Restaurant: lunch from 20,000 ARS. More open and accessible than Catena or Zuccardi — often possible without reservation.

Other Recommended Bodegas:

Wine Tours — By Bike, Remís, or Bus

How to Best Explore the Bodegas

★★★ By Bicycle — The Maipú Route

The bodegas in Maipú (15 km east of Mendoza center) are close together and accessible by bike. This is the most popular and fun way to explore the bodegas — sun, vineyards, fresh air, and a bottle of Malbec in the basket. Bike rental (including a map with the bodegas): approx. 8,000–12,000 ARS/day.

Recommended Bike Route (approx. 15 km, 4–6h):

  • Start: Mr. Hugo Bikes or Bikes & Wines (Maipú center)
  • Bodega La Rural (Museo del Vino): Free tour + small wine museum
  • Clos de Chacras: Boutique winery with excellent tasting in a historic manor house
  • Familia Cecchin: Organic wines and orange wines
  • Tempus Alba: Modern winery with restaurant
  • Return to the bike rental (or by Remís, if cycling after four tastings becomes "creative")

WARNING: Drinking and cycling is just as illegal in Argentina as drinking and driving! The police turn a blind eye to tourists on bikes, but don't overdo it. Per bodega: taste 2–3 glasses, not the whole bottle. Drink water!

★★ By Remís/Taxi — The Flexible Option

Hire a Remís driver for the day (approx. 40,000–60,000 ARS / 40–60€) and visit the bodegas as desired. The driver waits while you take the tour and taste. The most flexible and convenient option, especially for the Valle de Uco (100 km south, not feasible by bike).

★★ Organized Tour — The All-Inclusive Package

Half-day tours (3–4 bodegas, approx. 30,000–50,000 ARS / 30–50€) or full-day tours (5–6 bodegas + lunch at a bodega, approx. 60,000–100,000 ARS / 60–100€). Advantage: transport, guide, reservations all included. Disadvantage: less flexibility, fixed program. Good providers: Ampora Wine Tours, Uncorking Argentina, Trout & Wine.

★★★ Fiesta Nacional de la Vendimia (Wine Festival)

Argentina's largest festival and the most important wine festival in South America takes place every year in March in Mendoza. Highlight: The election of the Reina de la Vendimia (Wine Queen) in the amphitheater-shaped Teatro Griego Frank Romero Day at Cerro de la Gloria — with thousands of spectators, fireworks, dance, and of course: wine. The whole city celebrates for two weeks with parades, concerts, wine tastings, and gaucho festivals.

  • ★★ Parque General San Martín: 400-hectare city park — the most beautiful in Argentina after Palermo in BA. Lake, rose garden, zoo, the Cerro de la Gloria with the San Martín monument (panoramic view!), and the Teatro Griego (venue of the Vendimia)
