Blue Mountains National Park, Katoomba NSW 2780
Scenic World: 9:00–17:00 | Nationalpark: 24h
Nationalpark: kostenlos | Scenic World: 53 AUD (online) | Zug: ca. 8 AUD (Opal)

The Blue Mountains are Sydney's most spectacular day trip — a UNESCO World Heritage Site just 90 minutes west of the city. The name comes from the blue haze emitted by the vast eucalyptus forests, which bathes the deep gorges in a mystical blue light.

The heart of the Blue Mountains is Katoomba, a relaxed mountain town with a bohemian atmosphere. From here, it's only 10 minutes to Echo Point — the most famous lookout with views of the Three Sisters, three distinctive sandstone peaks rising 922 meters from the valley. The Aboriginal legend tells of three sisters turned to stone. At sunset, the rocks glow golden.

For adrenaline junkies: Scenic World in Katoomba offers four experiences in one:

  • Scenic Railway: The world's steepest passenger railway (52° incline) descends 310 meters into the ancient rainforest
  • Scenic Skyway: Cable car with a glass floor 270 meters above the gorge
  • Scenic Cableway: Gentler cable car down into the valley
  • Scenic Walkway: 2.4 km boardwalk through Jurassic rainforest at the valley floor

Combo ticket: 53 AUD (online)/59 AUD (on-site). All four attractions are worth it — plan 2–3 hours.

For hikers: The Grand Canyon Track (6.3 km, 3–4 hours, from Blackheath) leads through moss-covered gorges, under rock overhangs, and through caves — pure Tolkien atmosphere. The National Pass (5.4 km, 3–4 hours, from Wentworth Falls) offers dramatic views of 300-meter-high waterfalls.

💡 Tipp

Take the train from Sydney Central to Katoomba (2 hours, Opal Card: approx. 8 AUD, Sundays only 3.20 AUD!). It's much quieter during the week. For the best view of the Three Sisters: Go to the lesser-known Eaglehawk Lookout instead of Echo Point — better angle, no crowds.
