Nightlife & Bars

Sydney's nightlife has regained momentum after the repeal of the controversial "Lockout Laws" (2020). The scene is diverse — from rooftop bars with harbor views to hidden speakeasy bars to lively pub districts.

Top Bars

  • Opera Bar (Bennelong Point): The ultimate Sydney bar — open-air right at the Opera House with harbor views. Live music, Australian wines, cocktails from 22 AUD. Best at sunset.
  • Baxter Inn (Clarence Street, CBD): Hidden in a side alley, one of the best whisky bars in the world. Over 800 whisky varieties. The bartenders are experts — let them advise you. Free entry, drinks from 16 AUD.
  • Maybe Sammy (115 Harrington Street, The Rocks): Cocktail bar in the style of old Las Vegas. Won the "World's Best Bar" award. Cocktails 25–32 AUD, but worth every single dollar.
  • The Glenmore (96 Cumberland Street, The Rocks): Rooftop pub with direct views of the harbor and the Opera House. Beer from 10 AUD. The rooftop terrace is small — arrive early (from 5 pm).

Pub Districts

  • Surry Hills: Sydney's hippest district. Craft beer bars, wine bars, and the legendary Shady Pines Saloon (Shop 4, 256 Crown Street, press the doorbell — speakeasy bar in Western style).
  • Newtown (King Street): Alternative scene, punk pubs, dive bars, drag shows. The Courthouse Hotel and The Bank are institutions. LGBTQ+-friendly.
  • Kings Cross: Formerly Sydney's red-light district, now in transformation. The Llama Bar and Old Fitzroy Hotel (pub with theater!) are highlights.

💡 Tipp

Sydney's best bars are often hidden — no signs, entrances through alleys or behind bookshelves. That's part of the concept. Google the address beforehand and be surprised. Friday and Saturday nights in Surry Hills are the liveliest.
