Packing List for Chile
Chile is as climatically diverse as few other countries — from desert heat to glacial cold. The right packing list makes the difference between enjoyment and suffering.
What you need to pack
Clothing — The Layering Principle
Chile requires the layering principle like no other country: In the Atacama, it can be 30°C during the day and −10°C at night. In Patagonia, the weather changes every 30 minutes. The solution: Many thin layers instead of a few thick ones.

Equipment
- Sunscreen SPF 50+: VITAL in the Atacama and Patagonia (ozone hole!). Pack plenty — expensive in San Pedro and Puerto Natales
- Water bottle: 1-liter bottle, reusable. Tap water drinkable in cities
- Power adapter: Type C/L — European round plugs usually fit, but a universal adapter doesn't hurt
- Headlamp: For geyser tours (4 a.m.!), camping, and the W-Trek
- Daypack: 20–30 liters for day trips
- Binoculars: For wildlife watching in Patagonia (pumas, condors, flamingos)
- Travel pharmacy: Ibuprofen (altitude headaches!), anti-diarrheal, sunburn gel, insect repellent
Specifically for the W-Trek
- Equipment can be rented in Puerto Natales (cheaper than in Santiago!)
- Tent, sleeping bag (comfort −5°C), sleeping mat, stove, trekking poles
- Waterproof dry bags for everything
- Gaiters against mud and snow
- Food: Buy in the supermarket in Puerto Natales — dry food, granola bars, instant soups
Tipp
Don't forget: In Patagonia, it ALWAYS rains — no matter what the weather forecast says. A high-quality, windproof, and waterproof jacket (Gore-Tex or similar) is the most important investment for a trip to Chile. Don't skimp here! Cheap rain jackets can't withstand the Patagonian wind.
