What does the Côte d'Azur cost?
The Côte d'Azur is more expensive than the French average, but cheaper than its reputation. Nice is comparable to Barcelona, Cannes is more expensive, Monaco is extreme. The hinterland and smaller coastal towns are significantly cheaper. Since 2024, many municipalities have been charging a tourist tax of €0.50–5 per night depending on the hotel category.

Budget Levels
Backpacker / Budget (€50–80 per day)
Budgeting on the Côte d'Azur requires some creativity, but it's doable. Hostels in Nice from €25, lunch formule (starter + main course or main course + dessert) for €15–18, Socca as a snack for €3, free museums (Matisse, MAMAC, Musée Masséna), beaches free (public sections everywhere), regional trains instead of rental cars. Buy at the market on Cours Saleya in the evening — then the vendors sell leftovers cheaply.
Mid-range (€100–200 per day)
Boutique hotel in Nice's old town or Antibes, restaurant visits with Provençal cuisine and rosé, day trips to Monaco and Èze by train, a perfume workshop in Grasse. The most pleasant way to experience the Côte d'Azur — comfortable without a luxury surcharge.
Comfort / Luxury (€250–600+ per day)
Palace hotel on the Croisette or in Saint-Jean-Cap-Ferrat, Michelin-starred restaurants (Mirazur, Le Louis XV), yacht charter, beach club in Pampelonne, private helicopter flight over the coast. The Côte d'Azur in the luxury segment knows no bounds — in Monaco, a night can easily cost €1,000+.
Tipp
France's biggest money-saving hack: the Formule/Menu du jour. Almost every restaurant offers a 2–3 course lunch menu for €15–22 — often with the same quality as in the evening at double the price. Also: drinking espresso at the counter (comptoir) costs half as much as on the terrace!

Here's how to experience the Côte d'Azur without breaking the bank:
- Free museums in Nice: The Musée Matisse, MAMAC (Modern Art), Musée Masséna, and the Musée de la Photographie are free. Nice offers more free culture than any other city on the coast.
- Beaches cost nothing: All beaches in France are legally open to the public. Even in Cannes and Saint-Tropez, there are free sections between the private beaches — lay down your towel and enjoy.
- Use TER regional trains: The train line Nice–Monaco–Menton (€4.10) and Nice–Cannes (€7.90) is one of the most beautiful and affordable ways to explore the coast. No traffic jams, no parking stress.
- Marché du Cours Saleya: The famous market in Nice offers fresh fruit, cheese, olives, and Socca. In the evening, leftovers are sold cheaply — perfect for a beach picnic.
- Monaco for free: The Prince's Palace (changing of the guard at 11:55 free), the old town, the Jardin Exotique, and the harbor cost nothing. Even in the casino, you can admire the lobby for free.
- Eau du robinet: In restaurants, you can order tap water for free — just say "une carafe d'eau." It's drinkable and saves the expensive bottle.
- Nice Pass: The City Pass (€26–50 for 24–72h) offers free entry to museums, city tours, and public transport. Worth it for intensive sightseeing.
- Hinterland instead of coast: The mountain villages and the Var hinterland are significantly cheaper than the coastal cities. A lunch in Mougins or Vence costs half as much as in Cannes.
