A federal country with regional diversity: 16 federal states, each with its own identity, cuisine, and festivals.
Federalism & 16 Federal States
Germany is a federal republic of 16 federal states — each with its own government, culture, and often strong regional pride. Languages, dialects, cuisines, and festivals vary significantly.
- Bavaria — largest federal state, conservative-Catholic influenced, own traditions
- North Rhine-Westphalia — most populous state, Rhine-Ruhr metropolitan area
- Berlin, Hamburg, Bremen — city-states
- New Federal States (Brandenburg, Saxony, Saxony-Anhalt, Thuringia, Mecklenburg-Vorpommern) — part of the former GDR, part of the Federal Republic since 1990
History in Brief
- Holy Roman Empire — from the Middle Ages to 1806, loose federation of German states
- German Confederation, then German Empire (1871) under Bismarck
- Weimar Republic (1919-1933) after World War I
- National Socialism (1933-1945) — World War II, Holocaust; Germany as the cause of European and global tragedy
- Division 1949-1990 — FRG (Federal Republic) in the West, GDR (German Democratic Republic) in the East; Berlin Wall 1961-1989
- Reunification October 3, 1990 (National Holiday)
- Founding member of the EU since 1993
Confronting the Nazi era is a central element of German remembrance culture — visible in many memorials, monuments, and Stolpersteine.
