Mamanuca & Yasawa Islands

The Mamanuca group consists of around 20 islands west of Nadi, most of which are smaller than a football field. Their proximity to the airport (30–90 minutes by boat from Port Denarau) makes them the most visited island archipelago in Fiji. Here is also Monuriki, the island where Tom Hanks' film "Cast Away" was shot.

Top Islands of the Mamanucas

• Tokoriki — One of the northernmost Mamanuca Islands and a honeymoon paradise. Tokoriki Island Resort offers exclusive beachfront bures, an infinity pool, and world-class snorkeling right at the house reef. Adults only.
• Matamanoa — Small, quiet island with one of the most beautiful beaches in the Mamanucas. Perfect for couples seeking tranquility. Excellent house reef for snorkeling.
• Malolo & Malolo Lailai — The largest Mamanuca Islands with several resorts for different budgets: from backpacker (Funky Fish Beach Resort) to luxury (Likuliku Lagoon Resort — Fiji's only overwater bure resort!).
• Beachcomber Island — The legendary "party island": A tiny islet packed with backpackers, a bar, dorm beds, and a 24/7 party atmosphere. Not for those seeking peace, but an experience for young travelers.
• Monuriki — The "Cast Away" island. Uninhabited but visitable as a day trip. Gleaming white beach, dramatic rocks, crystal-clear water. One of Fiji's most photogenic spots.
• Treasure Island — Family-friendly, with an excellent kids club and shallow lagoon. Day trips from Denarau possible.

Cloud 9 — The Floating Bar

Fiji's most iconic hotspot: Cloud 9 is a floating platform in the turquoise waters of the Mamanucas, equipped with a bar, pizza oven, and DJ deck. During the day, boats anchor here, guests jump into the water, drink cocktails, and enjoy pizza with a sea view. Transfer from Denarau (about 45 minutes). Admission: from 35 FJD (plus boat transfer about 130 FJD). Best to visit during the week — it's crowded on weekends.

Surfing in the Mamanucas

The Mamanucas are home to some of the best surf breaks in the South Pacific:

• Cloudbreak — One of the world's most famous left reef breaks. Powerful, perfect waves over a coral reef, only for experienced surfers. Host access via resorts on Namotu or Tavarua.
• Restaurants — Right reef break, somewhat more accessible than Cloudbreak, but still challenging.
• Wilkes Pass — For experienced surfers, reachable by boat from Denarau.

Best surf time: April–October (south swell season). The breaks are reef-based — experience and reef shoes are mandatory.

The Yasawa group is a chain of about 20 volcanic islands stretching 80 km north of Nadi. Until 1987, the Yasawas were closed to tourists — today they are Fiji's backpacker paradise and hidden gem for adventurers. The islands are less developed than the Mamanucas, the beaches even emptier, the landscape more dramatic, and the experience more authentic.

Top Islands & Highlights

• Nacula Island — One of the northernmost Yasawa Islands with the spectacular Blue Lagoon — a sheltered bay with surreal blue water, where the film "The Blue Lagoon" (1980) was shot. Snorkeling, swimming, and marveling — the Blue Lagoon is Fiji's most famous spot.
• Wayalailai — Fantastic reef right off the beach, perfect for snorkeling. Several affordable backpacker resorts. Manta ray sightings from May to October!
• Waya Island — Dramatic volcanic mountains meet turquoise water. Hike to the summit for panoramic views. Barefoot Manta and Octopus Resort offer good value for money.
• Tavewa — Small, quiet island with the cheapest accommodations. Coralview Island Resort is popular with backpackers. Close to the Blue Lagoon.
• Sawa-i-Lau Caves — Mystical limestone caves on an uninhabited island. The lower cave is a natural pool with crystal-clear water, accessible through an underwater tunnel (flashlight needed!). The upper cave features ancient rock drawings. A magical place — one of the highlights of any Yasawa trip.
• Nanuya Lailai — Home to the Gold Coast Inn, one of the most idyllic budget spots. Crystal-clear water and secluded beaches.

Yasawa Flyer & Island Hopping

The Yasawa Flyer is a catamaran that runs daily from Port Denarau up and down the Yasawa chain. It stops at all major islands and is the standard mode of transport for island hopping. The trip to the northernmost island (Nacula) takes about 5 hours.

The Bula Pass offers flexible island hopping: You buy a pass for 5, 7, or more days and can use the Yasawa Flyer as often as you like. Perfect for backpackers wanting to hop from island to island. Prices: from about 450 FJD (5-day pass).

The waters around the Mamanuca and Yasawa Islands are among the best diving and snorkeling sites in the world. Fiji is known as the "Soft Coral Capital of the World" — the soft corals here glow in colors that seem almost unreal: violet, pink, orange, yellow, and deep red.

Top Dive and Snorkel Spots

• Supermarket (Mamanucas) — One of Fiji's most famous dive sites: A coral plateau with an incredible density of fish species. Like an underwater supermarket, hence the name. Depth: 5–15 m.
• Gotham City (Mamanucas) — Dramatic coral towers and canyons, populated by sharks, barracudas, and schools of fusiliers. Depth: 15–25 m.
• Manta Ray Passage (Yasawas) — From May to October, manta rays pass through the channels between the Yasawa Islands. Encounters with these gentle giants, which can reach up to 5 meters wingspan, are one of Fiji's highlights. Snorkeling possible!
• Blue Lagoon Reef (Yasawas) — Right at the famous Blue Lagoon. Shallow, colorful reef perfect for snorkeling. Clownfish, parrotfish, sea turtles.
• Plantation Pinnacle (Mamanucas) — An underwater coral tower rising from 30 meters deep to 5 meters below the surface. White and blacktip reef sharks regularly patrol.

Snorkeling for Beginners

You don't have to be a diver to experience Fiji's underwater world. Many of the best reefs are accessible directly from the beach:

• The house reef off Matamanoa Island — colorful and rich in fish, 10 meters from the beach
• Blue Lagoon at Nacula — shallow and crystal clear
• Likuliku Lagoon — turtles and rays in the protected bay

Snorkeling equipment is provided by most resorts free of charge.

• Long Beach Backpackers (Yasawas, Nacula) — Right on the long beach opposite the Blue Lagoon. Snorkeling, kayaking, village visits — budget paradise.

Mid-range (80–250€/night)

• Octopus Resort (Yasawas, Waya) — The best value for money in the Yasawas: comfortable bures, pool, dive center, beach bar. From 350 FJD including meals.
• Mantaray Island Resort (Yasawas, Nanuya Balavu) — Dorms and bures, pool, dive school. Good mix of backpacker and comfort.
• Plantation Island Resort (Mamanucas, Malolo Lailai) — Family-friendly, large resort with pool, kids club, and many activities.

Luxury (250€+/night)

• Likuliku Lagoon Resort (Mamanucas, Malolo) — Fiji's only overwater bure resort. Boutique luxury directly over the lagoon. Adults only. From 1,500 FJD/night.
• Tokoriki Island Resort (Mamanucas) — Only 36 bures on a dreamlike island. Infinity pool, excellent restaurant, top-notch diving. Honeymoon paradise.

Important Tips for Island Stays

• Meals: Most islands have no independent restaurants. Book meal packages — they are convenient and often cheaper than à la carte.
• Cash: There are no ATMs on the islands. Withdraw enough cash in Nadi. Credit cards are only accepted in larger resorts.
• Electricity: Some budget resorts in the Yasawas only have electricity for a few hours (generator). Bring a power bank!
• Mobile reception: Mostly Vodafone network on the Mamanucas and southern Yasawas. On the northern Yasawas: patchy to none.
