Best Travel Time & Climate

Greece has a typical Mediterranean climate: hot, dry summers and mild, rainier winters. What makes the country special, however, is the enormous diversity in a small area: While you can still swim in Crete in November, there is already snow on Olympus. The Aegean islands benefit from the Meltemi — a dry north wind that makes the heat more bearable from June to September, but can also disrupt ferries. Crete and the Dodecanese in the south are warmer than the Cyclades, Northern Greece is cooler and rainier than the rest.

🔴 High Season: July – August

Air temperatures 32-38°C, in Athens up to 42°C possible. Water temperatures 24-27°C — perfect for swimming and snorkeling. Advantages: Guaranteed sunshine, warm sea, all restaurants and ferries operate. Disadvantages: Prices 50-100% higher than in shoulder season, Santorini and Mykonos are unbearably crowded with up to 70,000 day tourists, ferries and flights fully booked, popular beaches overcrowded, and in Athens the heat is oppressive. The Meltemi wind in the Cyclades is a double-edged sword — it cools the heat on the skin but can cancel ferries (especially high-speed catamarans) and make swimming on north beaches uncomfortable. If you can manage it, avoid the first half of August — all of Greece has "Dekapentavgoustos" (August 15, Assumption of Mary), and the islands are bursting at the seams.

🟢 Best Time: May/June and September/October

The absolute recommendation for most travelers — for good reason:

  • May/June: Greece in its most beautiful form. Wildflowers cover the hills and islands in a sea of colors, the grass is still green (it withers in summer), the sea becomes pleasantly warm (20-24°C). Prices are moderate, the islands pleasantly lively but not overcrowded. Perfect for hiking (Samaria Gorge opens mid-May, Peloponnese and Crete bloom), for cultural trips (Athens still has bearable temperatures around 25-28°C), and for photography (the light is magnificent). Experiencing Orthodox Easter (often in April or May) on the islands is an unforgettable cultural experience — fireworks, processions, lambs on the spit.
  • September: THE insider tip, the best month. The sea is warmest (up to 26°C!), the crowds are gone (Greek schools start on September 11), prices drop by 30-40%, the light becomes golden and soft. The grape harvest begins on Santorini and the Peloponnese, figs ripen everywhere, the grapes are sweet. The Meltemi subsides, the sea becomes calmer. Ferries still run on the summer schedule. This is the perfect Greek month — period.
  • October: Works great for Crete (still 24°C water!), Rhodes, the Dodecanese, and the Peloponnese. On the Cyclades, it gets quieter — some smaller restaurants and hotels close from mid-October, but the weather often holds until the end of October. Athens is wonderful in October: mild (20-24°C), no heat, all museums and restaurants open, no queues at the sights.

🔵 Low Season: November – April

Most islands go into winter sleep: hotels, restaurants, and ferry connections are drastically reduced, some islands are completely shut down. But the low season has its own charm: Athens in winter (8-15°C, few tourists, Acropolis and museums almost to yourself, fantastic street food and nightlife). Crete and Rhodes remain mild year-round and more lively than other islands. Carnival (Apokries, February/March) in Patras is Greece's biggest and wildest folk festival — the third-largest carnival in Europe! Skiing on Parnassos or Olympus is surprisingly possible (December-March). Christmas in Thessaloniki has a special charm. And the ancient sites in winter are deserted and atmospheric.

Regional Differences: On the Cyclades islands, it is 2-3°C cooler in summer than in Athens (Meltemi!), but the wind can be annoying. Crete and Rhodes are 3-5°C warmer in winter than Athens and are suitable for year-round visits. Northern Greece (Thessaloniki, Meteora) has a more continental climate with cold winters (0-8°C, snow in the mountains) and hot summers. The Ionian Islands are rainier than the Aegean (hence so green!) — best from June to September.

💡 Tipp

September is the perfect Greek month: warmest sea (up to 26°C), no more Meltemi, fewer tourists, golden light for photos, falling prices, ripe figs and grapes, and the islands are still in full swing. If you have only one month to choose from — pick September!
