Oman has two international airports:
Muscat International Airport (MCT)
The country's modern main airport (completely reopened in 2018, spectacular architecture). Direct flights from Germany: Oman Air from Frankfurt and Munich (approx. 6 hours). Other options: Lufthansa (Frankfurt), Turkish Airlines (via Istanbul, from many German airports), Emirates (via Dubai), Qatar Airways (via Doha). Gulf Air (via Bahrain) and Air Arabia offer cheaper alternatives.
Transfer to Muscat: Taxi (fixed price, by zone: 5–15 OMR, approx. 12–36€), rental car counters in the arrivals area (all major providers), public bus line 1 (0.30 OMR to Ruwi bus station). The airport is only 25 km from the city center.
Salalah Airport (SLL)
International airport in the south of the country. Oman Air flies directly from Frankfurt (seasonal). Otherwise, transfer via Muscat (1.5h domestic flight) or via Dubai/Doha. Especially convenient if you only want to visit Salalah and the south.

Tipp
Oman Air is the national airline and offers excellent service with generous legroom — significantly better than many European airlines. For those flexible: Turkish Airlines via Istanbul is often 100–200€ cheaper than the direct flight and has only 2–3 hours layover.
Rental Car — The No. 1 Means of Transportation
A rental car is almost indispensable in Oman. The country is large, public transport is hardly available outside Muscat, and the roads are among the best in the entire region: wide, well-maintained highways, clear signage in Arabic and English, and hardly any traffic jams outside Muscat.

Do I Need a 4x4?
The big question — and the answer is: It depends.
- Regular car is sufficient for: Muscat, coastal roads, Nizwa, Sur, Salalah, most paved roads (approx. 80% of tourist destinations)
- 4x4 needed for: Wahiba Sands (desert tracks), Jebel Shams (last steep kilometers), Wadi Bani Khalid (last 2 km track), some wadis after rain, Musandam coastal road
- Compromise: SUV with all-wheel drive (e.g., Kia Sportage, Hyundai Tucson) — handles most tracks, cheaper than a true 4x4
Important Driving Tips
- Speed: 60 km/h in cities, 100–120 km/h on highways. Speed cameras everywhere — fines are hefty (from 10 OMR)
- Gasoline: Approx. 0.22 OMR/liter (approx. 0.53€) — a dream for Europeans! Fully subsidized
- Driving Style: Omanis generally drive calmly and respectfully. On highways, however, driving is fast — the left lane is for fast drivers. Flashing headlights mean "make way!"
- Navigation: Google Maps works excellently, even in the desert (download offline maps!). Waze is also popular
- Gas Stations: Everywhere along main roads, rarer in the desert and mountains — fill up beforehand
Achtung
DO NOT drive in wadis if rain is forecast — even if the sky is clear at your location! Flash floods can come from 50 km away and turn wadis into raging torrents in minutes. Every year, people die in wadi flash floods. Authorities close wadis in case of danger — adhere to the closures!
Bus, Taxi & Domestic Flights
Mwasalat — Public Buses
The state-owned bus company Mwasalat operates bus lines in Muscat and some intercity routes. However, the network is sparse and the frequency low:

Within Muscat, there is a growing city bus network (0.20–0.50 OMR) connecting the main districts, but it is not very practical for tourists.
Taxis
- White-orange taxis: The official taxis of Oman. No taximeter — negotiate the price beforehand! Short distance in Muscat: 1–3 OMR
- Airport taxis: Fixed prices depending on the zone, price list in the arrivals area
- Ride-hailing apps: OTaxi (official Oman app) and InDrive work well in Muscat. Cheaper and more transparent than street taxis
Domestic Flights
Oman Air and SalamAir fly Muscat → Salalah (1.5h, from 25 OMR one-way). Saves the 12-hour drive through the desert. Sensible if you only plan Salalah as an addition.

Tipp
Oman is a rental car country. The combination of low rental prices, dirt-cheap gasoline, and excellent roads makes self-driving the clear best option. As a rule of thumb: compact SUV for flexibility, 4x4 only if you want to tackle desert tracks or Jebel Shams on your own.
Rental Car Details: Insurance, Providers & Pitfalls
Insurance — The Essentials
Rental car insurance in Oman has some peculiarities you should be aware of:
- CDW (Collision Damage Waiver): Almost always included in the rental price. Covers damage to the rental car with a deductible (usually 150–300 OMR). Without CDW, you are liable for the full vehicle value!
- Off-road Exclusion: Most rental agreements exclude off-road driving! This means: If you have damage in the desert or on unpaved tracks, the insurance does not pay. For true off-road: choose a local 4x4 provider that explicitly covers off-road (e.g., Al Marwan, Mark Tours)
- Tire Damage: Usually NOT insured — and common on gravel roads. Check if there is a spare tire in the trunk and if you know how to change it
- Fines: If you receive a fine during the rental period (speed camera!), it will be charged to your credit card — often with an administrative fee

Booking Tips
- Book online in advance is almost always cheaper than at the airport counter
- Full coverage via credit card: Many premium credit cards (e.g., Amex Gold, Miles & More) offer free rental car full coverage insurance — check the conditions. Saves 5–15 OMR per day!
- Vehicle Condition Report: Upon pickup: document and photograph every dent and scratch. Otherwise, you pay for pre-existing damage upon return
- Fuel Policy: "Full to Full" is the fairest — pick up full, return full. Other models cost you more
- One-way rental: Pick up in Muscat, drop off in Salalah (or vice versa) is possible, but costs an additional 30–50 OMR
Organized or Individual?
Oman is excellent for individual travel — the infrastructure is first-class, the safety high, and with a rental car, you can reach almost everything. But organized tours have their merits. Here is the comparison:

The Compromise: Individual with Select Tours
The best strategy for most travelers: rental car + selective booking of individual activities:
- Self-drive: Muscat, Nizwa, Sur, wadis, coastal road — all easily done on your own
- Booked: Wahiba Sands (camp + dune bashing), Musandam (dhow tour), Daymaniyat Islands (diving trip), Ras al Jinz (turtle tour)
- Optionally booked: Jebel Shams/Akhdar (only if no 4x4 available), Snake Canyon (canyoning requires guide + equipment)
