Discover Guna Yala

The San Blas Islands — officially Guna Yala (formerly Kuna Yala) — are an archipelago of around 365 small coral islands along the Caribbean coast in northeastern Panama. Only about 50 of the islands are inhabited, most are tiny — some consist of no more than a handful of palm trees on a sandbank. It is the image you imagine under "Caribbean," in its purest, most untouched form.

What fundamentally distinguishes San Blas from any other destination in Panama: The islands belong to the Guna, an indigenous people who have maintained their autonomy since 1925 (after an armed revolution against Panama) and completely control tourism. There are no international hotels, no cruise ships, no resorts. Tourists stay in simple bamboo huts or hammocks on the Guna islands, eat what the fishermen catch, and live for a few days according to the rhythm of the islands.

A stay on the San Blas Islands is not a luxury vacation — it is an immersion into another world. No Wi-Fi (on most islands), no cell reception, often no electricity (or only a few hours from a generator). Instead: the clearest water you've ever seen, starry skies without any light pollution, fresh lobster straight from the sea, and the deep silence of a lonely island. Once experienced, it is never forgotten.

Arrival & Booking

Getting to San Blas is a little adventure in itself:

  • 4x4 + Boat (most common way): By Jeep from Panama City over an adventurous mountain road to the coast near Cartí (about 2.5–3 hours, including police checkpoint and Guna entry fee). From Cartí, then by motorboat to your island (15–60 min.). The ride over the bumpy jungle road is wild but spectacular — through dense rainforest and over the mountain pass.
  • Flight: Air Panama flies to Playón Chico and other Guna airstrips (45 min., 100–130$). Spectacular approach over the archipelago. More comfortable but more expensive.
  • Sailboat to Colombia: Some sailboats travel the route San Blas → Cartagena (3–5 days, from 400–600$). A legendary backpacker experience — you sail through the archipelago, stop at various islands, and then cross the open sea to Colombia.

Booking: All trips to San Blas are booked as all-inclusive packages — transport (Jeep + boat), accommodation, three meals, and island-hopping tours are included. Prices: 150–250$ for 2 days/1 night, 250–400$ for 3 days/2 nights. Best to book through the hostels in Panama City (Lunas Castle, Hostel Mamallena) — they have the best contacts and prices.

Achtung

Bring enough cash! There are NO ATMs, NO card readers, and often NO cell reception on the San Blas Islands. You will also need cash for Molas and extras. Small bills (1$, 5$, 10$) are important, as the Guna often do not have change.
