Discover Wrocław

Wrocław (pronounced: Vrots-waf) is a city that flies under the radar — and that's exactly what makes it so special. While Krakow and Warsaw are overrun by tourists, Wrocław offers an equally rich cultural experience, but with more space, lower prices, and a more relaxed atmosphere.

The city is located at the confluence of the Oder and four other rivers on 12 islands, connected by over 100 bridges — more than any other city in Poland, earning it the comparison to the "Venice of the North." Wrocław's history is unique: over the centuries, the city has been Polish, Bohemian, Habsburg, Prussian, German, and Polish again. This complexity is felt everywhere — in the architecture, in the cuisine, in the mentality.

The trademark of the city is the Krasnale (dwarfs): Over 300 bronze dwarf figures are hidden all over the city — on sidewalks, on house walls, on bridge railings. What began as a political protest by the "Orange Alternative" against communism is now a charming scavenger hunt that delights children and adults alike.

Plan 2–3 days for Wrocław. The city is compact and walkable.

Orientation

Wrocław's center lies on the islands between the branches of the Oder:

  • Rynek (Market Square): The colorful main square with the Gothic Town Hall and dozens of restaurants. Second or third most beautiful market square in Poland (a matter of taste!).
  • Ostrów Tumski (Cathedral Island): The oldest settlement in Wrocław — an island full of churches, from the Gothic cathedral to small chapels. Magical by gaslight in the evening.
  • Hala Stulecia (Centennial Hall): East of the center — the UNESCO-protected masterpiece of concrete architecture with Szczytnicki Park.
  • Nadodrze: The up-and-coming creative district north of the old town — street art, galleries, cafes in former factories.
  • University: West of the Rynek — the Baroque university with the famous Aula Leopoldina.

💡 Tipp

Download the "Wrocław Krasnale" app — it shows you the locations of all the dwarfs on a map. The scavenger hunt is the most entertaining way to explore the city. Kids will love you for it!
