Contemporary Art & Architecture

In recent decades, Portugal has experienced a remarkable artistic and architectural bloom that has gained international recognition — but is often overlooked by many travelers.

Architecture

Two Portuguese architects have won the Pritzker Prize (the "Nobel Prize of Architecture"):

Álvaro Siza Vieira (Prize 1992) — the master of poetic modernism. His Museu de Serralves in Porto (a white, flowing building in a park), the Portugal Pavilion at Expo 98 (with the famous concrete roof that floats like a sheet of paper in the air), and the reconstruction projects in Chiado (Lisbon, after the 1988 fire) are icons.

Eduardo Souto de Moura (Prize 2011) — works with stone, concrete, and light. His Estádio Municipal de Braga, built into a rock face, is one of the most spectacular football stadiums in the world. The Casa das Histórias Paula Rego in Cascais (with the striking red concrete pyramids) houses works by the most important contemporary Portuguese painter.

Visual Arts

Paula Rego (1935–2022) is the internationally best-known Portuguese artist. Her figurative, often disturbing paintings address themes such as oppression, femininity, and Portuguese folklore. The Casa das Histórias in Cascais is dedicated to her.

Joana Vasconcelos is the star artist of the present: huge installations made from unexpected materials — a chandelier made of tampons, an azulejo-covered sculpture, a crocheted fighter jet. Her works have been displayed at Versailles and in the Guggenheim collection.

Museums

The most important art museums:

  • MAAT (Museum of Art, Architecture, and Technology) in Lisbon — a wave-shaped building on the Tagus by Amanda Levete, with rotating exhibitions of contemporary art
  • Museu Berardo (Belém, Lisbon) — one of the best collections of modern art in Europe, with works by Warhol, Pollock, Bacon, and Jeff Koons. Free admission
  • Serralves (Porto) — museum, park, and cultural center in one, with a strong program for contemporary art
  • Museu Nacional de Arte Antiga (Lisbon) — Portugal's number one art museum for old masters, with the famous Painéis de São Vicente (circa 1470), the enigma of Portuguese painting
