Best Travel Time & Climate

Portugal has an Atlantic-Mediterranean climate with mild winters, warm to hot summers, and significantly more sunshine hours than most European countries. There are considerable regional differences: The Algarve in the south is Europe's sunniest region, the green north around Porto is rainier and cooler, and Madeira enjoys spring all year round. Crucial for travel planning: Portugal is one hour behind Germany (CET−1), which means the sun sets only around 9:30 PM in summer — wonderfully long evenings!

🟢 Best Time: April–June and September–October

The absolute recommendation for most travelers. The weather is wonderful, prices are moderate, and the tourist crowds are not yet (or no longer) there.

  • April/May: Portugal at its finest. Wildflowers cover the landscape, temperatures are perfect for sightseeing (18–25 °C), the sea is slowly warming up (16–18 °C — still fresh!). Ideal for Lisbon, Porto, Sintra, and hikes on Madeira or in the Alentejo. Easter processions in Braga are a cultural highlight.
  • June: The transition to high season. Pleasantly warm (22–28 °C), the sea becomes warm enough for swimming (19–21 °C in the Algarve). On June 13, Lisbon celebrates the spectacular Santo António festival with sardine grills in every alley, street parties, and folk dances in Alfama — one of Europe's greatest city experiences.
  • September: THE insider tip. The sea is the warmest (22–24 °C in the Algarve!), the summer heat subsides, the beaches empty, prices drop by 20–30%. Perfect light for photos, grape harvest in the Douro Valley, still full restaurant menus everywhere.
  • October: Still glorious in the Algarve (23–25 °C, water 20–21 °C) and in Lisbon. In the north, it becomes cooler and rainier, Madeira remains mild. Excellent for hikes and cultural trips without heat and crowds.

🔴 High Season: July–August

Hot, crowded, and expensive — but still worthwhile if you know the right spots. Temperatures inland (Alentejo, Évora) can reach 40 °C+. Lisbon becomes oppressively hot (30–35 °C). The Algarve is bustling — beaches are full, prices 50–100% higher, restaurants fully booked. However, the sea is perfectly warm (22–24 °C), and the long evenings are great. Tip: The west coast (Costa Vicentina, Ericeira) remains more bearable even in high summer thanks to the Atlantic wind and is less crowded than the south coast. Madeira is pleasant in summer (24–26 °C), never too hot.

🔵 Low Season: November–March

Portugal is an excellent winter destination — at least in the south. The Algarve remains mild throughout the winter (13–17 °C) with many sunny days and blooming almond trees in January/February. Lisbon in winter has charm: few tourists, mild temperatures (10–15 °C), open museums and restaurants, and Fado sounds even more melancholic in the rainy season. Madeira is travelable year-round (17–20 °C in winter, subtropical bloom). Porto and the north are cool and rainy in winter (8–14 °C, lots of precipitation) — but atmospheric, affordable, and authentic. Surfing on the west coast is in high season in winter — Nazaré produces the world's biggest waves (up to 30 meters!).

Regional Differences: The Algarve is on average 3–5 °C warmer than Lisbon and has significantly less rain (only 40 rainy days/year vs. 60 in Lisbon and over 100 in Porto). Porto and the north are cooler and wetter — expect frequent rain from October to May. Madeira has its own microclimate: the south (Funchal) is sunny and dry, the north foggy and lush green. In the interior of the Alentejo, extreme temperatures prevail in summer — 38–42 °C are not uncommon.

💡 Tipp

September is the perfect month for Portugal: warmest sea, fewer tourists, falling prices, golden light, grape harvest in the Douro Valley, and still summery temperatures throughout the country. If you have only one month to choose from — choose September!
