What does Sardinia cost?
Sardinia has a divided price level: The Costa Smeralda and Porto Cervo are among the most expensive corners of Europe, while the inland and the west and south coasts are significantly cheaper than the Italian mainland. Generally, prices are at German levels or slightly below — except for the luxury enclaves in the northeast.

Budget Levels
Backpacker / Budget (45–70€ per day)
Campsites (Sardinia has many good ones!), simple B&Bs or Agriturismi inland, self-catering with supermarket purchases (Conad, Eurospin), pizza or panini as an affordable meal, bus as the main transport (limited!). Budget travel in Sardinia is more challenging than on the mainland because public transport is patchy and a rental car is almost indispensable. Camping greatly reduces costs — especially on the east and west coasts, there are beautiful spots right by the sea.
Mid-range (80–160€ per day)
Agriturismi (farm stays with half-board — the best value for money in Sardinia!), mid-range hotels, rental car, trattoria meals for lunch and dinner, occasionally a boat tour. The ideal way to experience Sardinia: explore the coasts and mountains flexibly by car, enjoy Sardinian cuisine in authentic Agriturismi, and stay in small beach hotels. Agriturismi often offer half-board with a homemade 4-course menu for 25–40€ per person — unbeatable.
Comfort / Luxury (200–600€+ per day)
Boutique hotels in Alghero or Cagliari, 5-star resorts on the Costa Smeralda, upscale restaurants, private boat charters in the La Maddalena Archipelago, wine tastings at premium wineries. The Costa Smeralda is the playground of the super-rich — Porto Cervo has some of the most expensive hotels and restaurants in the Mediterranean. But even beyond that, Sardinia offers excellent luxury Agriturismi and small design hotels at fair prices.

The best saving tip for Sardinia: Book an Agriturismo with half-board inland. For 60–90€ per person, you get a beautiful room plus a multi-course dinner with local products, homemade pasta, and wine — culinary at star level, priced at tavern level.
Saving Tips
Sardinia doesn't have to be expensive — with these tips, you can experience the island affordably and authentically:
- Travel in the off-season: In May, June, September, and October, accommodations and rental cars are 30–50% cheaper than in August. August is particularly expensive — Ferragosto drives prices up.
- Book Agriturismi: Farm stays with overnight accommodation and half-board are Sardinia's secret weapon. The food is homemade, the atmosphere is familial, and the prices are fair. Many are not on the major booking portals — search directly on Google or at sardegnaturismo.it.
- Book rental cars early: In summer, rental cars in Sardinia become scarce and expensive. Booking 2–3 months in advance saves 30–50%. Local providers (e.g., Autonoleggio Ferretti) are often cheaper than international chains.
- Breakfast at the bar: A Cornetto (croissant) and cappuccino at the bar cost 2.50–3.50€ — the typical Italian breakfast is affordable and perfect. Hotel breakfasts are rarely worth the price.
- Free beaches: Sardinia's most beautiful beaches are almost all freely accessible. Sun loungers cost 10–20€ per set — bring your own towel!
- Lunch menu (Menù del giorno): Many trattorias offer a daily lunch menu (Primo + Secondo + water) for 12–18€ — significantly cheaper than à la carte.
- Water: A 6-pack of 1.5l bottles in the supermarket costs under 2€ instead of 2–3€ per bottle in a restaurant.
- Ferry instead of flight: Night ferries from Civitavecchia or Genoa are bookable from 30€ per person and save a hotel night. Taking a car starts at 60€.
