Pilatus — Golden Round Trip★★★
The Pilatus (2,128 m) is Lucerne's local mountain and offers one of the most spectacular mountain excursions in Switzerland — especially as the Golden Round Trip, a combination of boat, world's steepest cogwheel railway, and gondola.

The round trip is a logistical masterpiece:
- Boat from Lucerne to Alpnachstad (1 hour, across the lake)
- Cogwheel train from Alpnachstad to Pilatus Kulm (30 min, up to 48% gradient — the steepest cogwheel railway in the world!)
- Enjoy the view at the summit (73 Alpine peaks visible!)
- Gondola + aerial cableway down to Kriens
- Bus back to Lucerne
Or vice versa. The cogwheel route through tunnels and over rocky outcrops with views of the lake is breathtaking.

At the summit: a historic mountain hotel (overnight stay from 280 CHF, including sunrise and sunset WITHOUT other tourists), two restaurants, and a circular trail with a 360° panorama. In clear weather, the view extends from the Bernese Alps to the Black Forest. The Dragon Path Hike (30 min, easy) circles the summit with information boards about the Pilatus legend (a dragon is said to have lived here).
💡 Tipp
Start early in the morning (first boat at 9:12 am) and take the boat to Alpnachstad FIRST, then the cogwheel train up. This way, you'll have the summit almost to yourself by 11 am. Most tourists arrive in the afternoon. If you stay overnight at the mountain hotel, you'll experience the sunset and sunrise alone on the summit — priceless.
