Airports

Ljubljana Jože Pučnik Airport (LJU) is Slovenia's only international airport, 27 km north of the capital near Brnik. From Germany, the following airlines fly:

• Lufthansa — From Frankfurt and Munich to Ljubljana. Flight time: 1.5–2 hours. Prices: 100–300€ return.
• Eurowings — From Stuttgart and Düsseldorf, seasonally. Often cheaper than Lufthansa.
• Wizz Air — Affordable connections, especially from Germany to Ljubljana or nearby (Trieste, Klagenfurt).
• easyJet — Seasonal from Berlin.

Alternative Airports: For cheaper flights, it's worth checking the neighboring airports:

• Trieste (TRS) — 90 km from Ljubljana, 1 km from the Slovenian border. Ryanair offers cheap flights from various German cities.
• Klagenfurt (KLU) — 85 km from Ljubljana. Good connection to Bled and the Julian Alps.
• Zagreb (ZAG) — 140 km. Larger flight offer, but longer transfer.
• Venice Marco Polo (VCE) — 230 km. Wide selection of flights, attractive for coastal visitors.

From Ljubljana Airport to the center: GoOpti Shuttle (from 9€, book online), public bus (6.30€, travel time 50 min.), or taxi (approx. 35–40€).

By Car

Slovenia is ideally accessible by car from southern Germany — and it's the most flexible way to travel, as many places (Soča Valley, Goriška Brda, Karst) are difficult to reach without a car.

Important: Toll Sticker! For Slovenian motorways, you need an E-Vignette (electronic, no sticker). Prices: 1 week 15€, 1 month 30€, 1 year 110€. Buy online at evinjeta.dars.si before entering. Without a vignette, a 300€ fine is threatened. The E-Vignette is linked to the license plate — make sure the rental company has not included the vignette with rental cars.

By Train

The train is an environmentally friendly alternative:

• Munich → Ljubljana: Direct ÖBB train via Salzburg and Villach. Travel time: approx. 6 hours. Early bird from 29€ (Sparschiene).
• Vienna → Ljubljana: Direct ÖBB train. Travel time: approx. 6 hours. Sparschiene from 19€.
• Zurich → Ljubljana: Via Innsbruck/Villach or via Milan/Trieste. 8–10 hours, transfer required.

The Slovenian railway network (Slovenske železnice / SŽ) connects Ljubljana with Maribor (2h), Koper (2.5h), Bled (1h), and Postojna (1h). The trains are cheap but slow and not always punctual. For Bled, travel to Lesce-Bled (4 km from the lake — bus or taxi to the lake).

Rental Car — The Best Option

For most trips to Slovenia, a rental car is the most flexible choice. The country is small enough that you can reach any point in a maximum of 2.5 hours, the roads are in good condition, and the signage is clear. Prices: from 30€/day (small car) to 60€/day (SUV). Providers: Europcar, Sixt, Budget, Enterprise, as well as local providers (Avant2Go, ABC Rent).

Parking Tips: In Ljubljana, there is a car-free old town — use Park & Ride or parking garages on the outskirts (2–3€/hour). At Lake Bled in summer: parking spaces fill up quickly, arrive early in the morning. In Piran: use the parking garage at the entrance (Garage Fornače, 1.50€/hour), the old town is car-free.

Buses

The bus network (Avtobusna postaja Ljubljana as the central hub) connects all major places:

Tickets and schedules: ap-ljubljana.si or getbybus.com. In summer, additional connections to tourist destinations. Flixbus serves the Ljubljana–Maribor route.

Cycling

Slovenia is an excellent cycling country — especially the Drava Valley, Goriška Brda, the coast, and the flat Prekmurje. E-bike rentals are available in all tourist locations. In Ljubljana: BicikeLJ — the city bike rental system (1st hour free, registration 1€/week).
