Garden Route

The Garden Route (N2 between Mossel Bay and Storms River) is South Africa's answer to the Great Ocean Road and the Amalfi Coast — only wilder, more diverse, and cheaper. The name comes from the lush vegetation: subtropical forests, fynbos heath, blooming gardens, and a biodiversity among the highest in the world.

Most travelers drive the Garden Route as a rental car road trip in 5–7 days, either from Cape Town to Port Elizabeth or vice versa. You can rush through it in 2 days, but that would be a crime — the Garden Route thrives on stops, detours, and spontaneous discoveries.

Plan for at least 5 days. If you include Hermanus, Oudtshoorn, and Jeffrey's Bay (recommended!), you'll need 7–10 days.

Hermanus is located 120 km southeast of Cape Town on Walker Bay and is the best place in the world to watch whales from land. Between June and November (peak: September/October), Southern Right Whales come so close to the shore that you can see them from the cliffs with the naked eye — sometimes only 10 meters away!

Whale Watching

• Cliff Path: The 12 km long cliff path from Grotto Beach to New Harbour offers dozens of viewpoints. Pack binoculars, but often the naked eye is enough.
• Whale Crier: Hermanus has the world's only Whale Crier — he blows a kelp horn and shows on a board where whales have been spotted.
• Boat Tours: From the harbor (approx. 900 ZAR/45€, 2h). Boats are allowed to approach up to 50 m — and often the whales come closer on their own.
• Hermanus Whale Festival: End of September/early October. South Africa's largest marine festival with concerts, markets, and maximum whale population.

Shark Cage Diving

In nearby Gansbaai (20 km south), you can be lowered into the water in a steel cage and experience Great White Sharks up close. Shark Alley between Dyer Island and Geyser Rock has one of the highest concentrations of Great Whites in the world. Providers: White Shark Diving Company, Marine Dynamics. From 2,200 ZAR (110€).

Oudtshoorn is not directly on the Garden Route but behind the mountains in the Little Karoo — a semi-desert plain that is surprisingly different from the green coast. The drive over the spectacular Outeniqua Pass (from George, 60 km) or the Robinson Pass (from Mossel Bay) is an experience in itself.

Highlights

• Ostrich Farms: Oudtshoorn is the "Ostrich Capital of the World". Safari Ostrich Farm and Highgate Ostrich Farm offer tours where you can see the giant birds up close (and yes, you can ride them — but you don't have to). From 200 ZAR (10€).
• Cango Caves: A spectacular dripstone cave system, 30 km north of Oudtshoorn. The Standard Tour (1h) leads through illuminated halls with ceilings up to 30 m high. The Adventure Tour (1.5h) crawls through narrow passages — not for claustrophobics! 170/225 ZAR.
• Route 62: The longest wine route in the world runs through the Little Karoo — a scenically stunning alternative to the N2 between Cape Town and the Garden Route. Wineries, lavender fields, fruit farms, and quirky villages like Barrydale and Montagu.
• Swartberg Pass: The untarred pass road over the Swartberg mountain range (1,583 m) is one of South Africa's great driving adventures. Built by Thomas Bain 1881–1888 with convict labor, UNESCO World Heritage Site. No 4×4 needed, but respect the switchbacks.

Mossel Bay marks the official start of the Garden Route (coming from the west). Here, in 1488, the Portuguese navigator Bartolomeu Dias landed — marking the beginning of the European discovery of South Africa. The Dias Museum at the harbor tells the story and displays a replica of his caravel.

Highlights

• Post Office Tree: The oldest "postbox" in South Africa — a Milkwood tree where sailors left messages in a boot since the 15th century. Today, you can drop postcards here that actually get delivered.
• Santos Beach: One of the few truly warm bathing beaches on the Garden Route (Indian Ocean, 20–22°C in summer). Palms, white sand, tidal pools.
• Shark Cage Diving: Also possible here, cheaper than in Gansbaai. White Shark Africa from 1,800 ZAR.
• Point of Human Origins: Archaeological finds in the Pinnacle Point Cave show that humans lived here 164,000 years ago — the oldest evidence of shellfish use and ochre as paint.

Knysna (pronounced: "Neisna" — the K is silent!) is the jewel of the Garden Route. The town is situated on a vast lagoon connected to the ocean by two massive sandstone cliffs — the Knysna Heads. Add to that ancient forests, excellent restaurants, and a relaxed atmosphere.

Highlights

• Knysna Heads: The two massive sandstone cliffs at the entrance to the lagoon are the town's landmark. Viewpoint at the Eastern Head (access via George Rex Drive). Hike to the Western Head via the Featherbed Trail (by boat + hike, 695 ZAR/35€).
• Knysna Waterfront: Compact harbor area with restaurants, shops, and the legendary Knysna Oyster Company — fresh oysters from 120 ZAR (6€) per dozen. Plus a glass of Sauvignon Blanc. Perfection.
• Knysna Forest: The last remaining Afrotemperate Rainforests in South Africa. Hike to the Millwood Goldmine Trail or the Big Tree Walk (800-year-old Outeniqua Yellowwoods, 40 m high!). The last wild Knysna elephants also live here — supposedly only 1–3 animals, almost never seen.
• Mitchell's Knysna Brewery: South Africa's oldest craft brewery. Try the Forester's Lager and the Bosun's Bitter. Brewery tour with tasting 120 ZAR.

Knysna Oyster Festival

Every July, Knysna transforms into South Africa's gourmet capital for 10 days: oyster eating contests, wine pairings, marathon, cycling races, and live music. One of the best festivals in the country.

The Tsitsikamma National Park (part of the Garden Route National Park) is the dramatic highlight of the Garden Route — 80 km of rugged rocky coastline, ancient forests, and roaring rivers plunging into deep gorges.

Highlights

• Storms River Mouth: The park's most famous spot. From the rest camp, a 1 km path leads over boardwalks and stairs to the suspension bridge over the Storms River Mouth — THE photo motif of the Garden Route. Below: turquoise water in a deep gorge. Entrance: 228 ZAR (12€).
• Otter Trail: South Africa's most famous long-distance hiking trail. 42 km in 5 days along the coast, through forests, and over river crossings. Booked months in advance — booking through SANParks.
• Kayak & Lilo: Kayak or lilo tours in the Storms River Gorge. Paddle deep into the moss-covered, jungle-clad ravine. Magical! From 650 ZAR (33€).
• Canopy Tour: Zip-line through the treetops of the ancient forest. 10 platforms, 30 m above the ground. Stormsriver Adventures, 750 ZAR (38€).
• Big Tree Trail: Easy walk (30 min) to an 800-year-old Outeniqua Yellowwood. Diameter 9 m, height 37 m.

Jeffrey's Bay (called "J-Bay" by locals) is located at the eastern end of the Garden Route and is one of the Top 10 surf spots in the world. The perfect right-hand wave at Supertubes Reef is legendary — the Corona J-Bay Open, a stop of the World Surf League, takes place here every July.

Surfing

• Supertubes: The most famous wave in South Africa — a long, fast, hollow right-hand wave breaking up to 300 m. Only for experienced surfers!
• Kitchen Windows: Beginner-friendly break north of Supertubes. Surf schools offer lessons here.
• Best Time: June–August (winter swell brings the best waves). In summer, it's flatter but warmer.
• Board Rental: From 200 ZAR/day (10€). Surf lessons from 500 ZAR (25€) incl. board and wetsuit.

Beyond Surfing

• Kabeljous Nature Reserve: Birdwatching in the estuarine wetlands. Over 200 species.
• Shell Museum: One of the largest shell collections in the world. Surprisingly fascinating.
• Dolphin Beach: Family beach with frequent dolphin sightings. In summer, water temperatures around 22°C.

The Classic Route: Cape Town → Port Elizabeth (7–10 days)
