Rooftop Bars & Nightlife★★
Bangkok has the most spectacular rooftop bar scene in the world — no other city can match the combination of height, view, and tropical warmth. Since the film "Hangover 2" (filmed in the Sky Bar of the Lebua Hotel), Bangkok's rooftop terraces have become a must-see. But even beyond the skyscrapers, Bangkok's nightlife pulses in countless facets.
The Sky Bar at Lebua State Tower (63rd floor) is the classic: a dizzying balcony over the city, a glowing counter extending over the abyss, and a view that leaves you speechless. Cocktails from 500 THB (~13€) — expensive for Bangkok, but the panorama is worth it. Dress code: Smart Casual, no flip-flops or shorts. Alternatively, the Vertigo & Moon Bar (61st floor, Banyan Tree Hotel) offers a similarly dizzying setting on an open rooftop platform without glass walls — pure adrenaline rush.
Cheaper and more local are the bars in Soi 11 (Sukhumvit): "Cheap Charlie's" was for years Bangkok's most charming shack (with chandeliers made from plastic bottles), and the surrounding bars offer happy hour cocktails from 150 THB (~4€). The Thonglor area (Sukhumvit Soi 55) is the nightlife district of Bangkok's young elite: craft beer bars, Japanese izakayas, live music venues, and clubs where dancing continues until sunrise.
The red-light district (Patpong, Nana, Soi Cowboy) is part of Bangkok's reality, even if it's not everyone's cup of tea. Patpong has increasingly turned into a night market and is less seedy than its reputation. For a more authentic Thai experience, visit the Ratchadapisek area: Here, Thais dance in karaoke bars, whiskey lounges, and Luk Thung clubs (Thai country music) — not a tourist in sight.
Important: Since 2023, the official curfew in designated entertainment districts has been extended to 4 AM (previously 2 AM). In practice, most bars close between 1 and 2 AM — the after-hour scene then shifts to clubs and private locations.
💡 Tipp
The rooftop bars are most beautiful at sunset (around 6:30 p.m.), but also the busiest. Come at 5:30 p.m. for a spot with a view. For the best value: The "Octave Rooftop Bar" (45th floor, Marriott Sukhumvit) offers Happy Hour from 5-7 p.m. with cocktails from 250 THB — with a view that rivals the Sky Bar.
