Cappadocia

Göreme is the tourist heart of Cappadocia — a small village nestled in a landscape of fairy chimneys and tuff rocks like a film set. Many of the rocks house cave hotels, restaurants, and bars. The atmosphere is unique: in the morning, the balloons rise, during the day you explore rock churches, and in the evening you sit on a rooftop terrace overlooking the illuminated lunar landscape.

Göreme Open-Air Museum

The Göreme Open-Air Museum is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and the most important attraction in Cappadocia. A complex of over 30 rock-carved monasteries and churches from the 10th–13th centuries with partially excellently preserved Byzantine frescoes. Highlights:

• Karanlık Kilise (Dark Church): The best-preserved frescoes in Cappadocia — vibrant colors after 800 years because the church had no light exposure. Separate ticket (100 ₺ extra), but absolutely worthwhile.
• Elmalı Kilise (Apple Church): Cross-shaped church with a dome and scenes from the life of Christ.
• Tokalı Kilise (Buckle Church): The largest rock church — slightly off the main site, with impressive blue frescoes.
• Yılanlı Kilise (Snake Church): Named after a depiction of Saint George fighting the dragon/snake.

The hot air balloon ride over Cappadocia is one of the world's great bucket-list experiences — and it lives up to its promise. At sunrise, up to 150 balloons rise simultaneously over the fairy chimneys, valleys, and rock formations. The play of light at sunrise over this surreal landscape is simply breathtaking.

Practical Info

• Season: April to November (best months: May, June, September, October). In winter, flights are rarely possible (wind, cold).
• Duration: 60–90 minutes flight time (plus transfer, preparation, and champagne toast afterward). Total duration: approx. 4 hours (pickup at 4:30–5:00 AM).
• Prices: Standard flight (20–24 passengers): 150–200 €. Deluxe flight (12–16 passengers): 200–280 €. Small group (6–8 passengers): 280–350 €.
• Providers: Royal Balloon (premium, excellent), Butterfly Balloons (internationally known), Voyager Balloons, Kapadokya Balloons. Book directly with the provider, not through the hotel (surcharge!).
• Weather: Flights are canceled at short notice due to weather (wind!). Plan at least 2 nights in Cappadocia so you have a second chance in case of cancellation.

Uçhisar — only 5 km from Göreme — is dominated by a massive, 60 m high tuff stone fortress (Uçhisar Kalesi), the highest point in Cappadocia. The rock is riddled like Swiss cheese — hundreds of cave rooms, tunnels, and passages that once served as homes, storage, and defense facilities.

From the top of the castle, you have the best 360° panoramic view over Cappadocia: Göreme, the Pigeon Valley, the fairy chimneys, and on clear days, the snow-capped peaks of the volcanoes Erciyes (3,917 m) and Hasan Dağı (3,253 m). The view at sunset is overwhelming.

Uçhisar is quieter and more elegant than Göreme — here are some of the best cave hotels in Cappadocia (e.g., Museum Hotel, Argos in Cappadocia, Taskonaklar). Those seeking luxury in a surreal setting will find it here.

Beneath the surface of Cappadocia lies a wonder: over 200 underground cities, carved into the soft tuff stone, capable of housing thousands of people. The oldest parts date back to the 7th/8th century BC (Hittites or Phrygians), later expansions served as refuges for Christians from Arab raids in the 6th–10th century.

Derinkuyu

The largest and deepest underground city — 85 meters deep, 8 floors, capacity for an estimated 20,000 people. Everything was available: church, school, wine cellar, oil press, wells, ventilation shafts, and massive round stone doors that could seal off individual floors. A tunnel is said to connect Derinkuyu with the 9 km distant city of Kaymaklı. The narrowness (some passages only 1.70 m high) is not for claustrophobics, but the engineering marvel is impressive.

Kaymaklı

The second-largest underground city — less deep than Derinkuyu (4 accessible floors), but wider and less claustrophobic. Particularly impressive: the wine cellars and grain storage, suggesting a highly organized society.

Özkonak

Less visited than Derinkuyu and Kaymaklı — a hidden gem for those who want to experience the underground cities without crowds. Unique: communication tubes between floors and holes in the ceilings through which hot oil could be poured on intruders.

The Ihlara Valley (Ihlara Vadisi) is Cappadocia's most spectacular gorge — 14 km long, up to 150 m deep, with a green river (Melendiz) at the bottom and over 100 rock churches in the steep walls. It is the counter-program to the tourist density in Göreme: wild, green, quiet.

The most beautiful hike in Cappadocia leads through the valley: From the main entrance, you descend 382 steps into the gorge and hike along the river through poplars, willows, and orchards. Every few hundred meters, a path branches off to a rock church — some with frescoes that are 1,000 years old.

Highlights along the way

• Ağaçaltı Kilisesi: "Church under the Tree" — the best-preserved frescoes in the valley, with depictions of the Ascension and the Three Wise Men.
• Yılanlı Kilise: "Snake Church" — murals of sinners being punished by snakes.
• Kokar Kilise: "Fragrant Church" — presumably named after the incense burned here.
• Selime Monastery: At the northern end of the valley — a massive rock complex with a cathedral, kitchen, and monk cells. Star Wars fans know the place as a filming location (scenes from Episode I).

Cappadocia on foot is the most intense experience — beyond the roads, a world of colorful rock formations, hidden churches, and surreal landscapes opens up.

The most beautiful valleys

• Pigeon Valley (Güvercinlik Vadisi): From Uçhisar to Göreme, 4 km. Easy, fantastic fairy chimneys, pigeon houses in the rocks. The classic.
• Red Valley (Kızılçukur) & Rose Valley (Güllüdere): The most beautiful rock formations in Cappadocia in red, pink, and orange tones. The sunset from the panoramic point at Red Valley is unforgettable. Approx. 5 km, 2–3 hours.
• Love Valley (Aşk Vadisi): The famous phallic-shaped fairy chimneys — quirky and photogenic. Short hike (2 km), ideal in the morning.
• Devrent Valley (Imagination Valley): Bizarre rock formations resembling animals — camel, dolphin, Napoleon. No hike needed, visible from the roadside.
• Meskendir Valley: Hidden valley between Göreme and the open-air museum with tunnels, rock churches, and vineyards. Hardly any tourists, a true explorer's tour.

ATV & Horse

For those who don't want to hike: ATV tours through the valleys (from 600 ₺/hour) and horseback rides (from 800 ₺/2h) are popular alternatives. By the way, Cappadocia means "land of beautiful horses" — riding has a tradition here.

Avanos on the banks of the Kızılırmak (Red River) — the longest river in Turkey — has been the center of Cappadocian ceramic art for millennia. The red clay of the river provides the material, and pottery workshops line up throughout the town.

• Pottery courses: In many workshops, you can operate the potter's wheel yourself and shape a vase or bowl (from 200 ₺, 30–60 min). Chez Galip and Güray Museum are the most famous.
• Güray Ceramic Museum: An underground museum in cave rooms with an impressive collection of Cappadocian ceramics over the centuries.
• Zelve Open-Air Museum: 3 km north — a complex of three valleys with cave dwellings, churches, and mosques. Inhabited until 1952! Fewer frescoes than Göreme, but more atmospheric and quieter.
• Paşabağ (Monks Valley): The most impressive fairy chimneys in Cappadocia — some with three heads, with hermit caves at the top. Right by the road, freely accessible.

Arrival

• Flight: Kayseri (ASR, 75 km) or Nevşehir (NAV, 40 km). From Istanbul 1h 15 (Turkish Airlines, Pegasus). Transfer to the hotel is organized by most accommodations (200–500 ₺).
• Bus: From Istanbul 10–12 hours (night bus), from Antalya 8–9 hours. Buses go to Nevşehir, from there dolmuş to Göreme.

Transportation

Rental car is the best option — the sights are spread over a large area. Alternatively: Organized Tours (Red Tour, Green Tour, Blue Tour) from 500–800 ₺/person, covering all highlights in one day. Dolmuşes regularly connect Göreme, Uçhisar, Avanos, and Ürgüp.

Accommodation

The experience in Cappadocia is the cave hotel stay — vaulted ceilings, stone walls, modern bathrooms, rooftop terrace with balloon view. Prices: From 1,500 ₺ (~43 €) for a simple cave pension, 3,000–10,000 ₺ (~85–285 €) for boutique cave hotels, up to 20,000 ₺+ for luxury (Museum Hotel, Argos). Book early — especially April–October!

Weather

Cappadocia has a continental climate: Hot and dry in summer (30–35°C), cold with snow in winter (-5 to 5°C). Even in summer, nights are noticeably cool (10–15°C). The best time: May/June and September/October — pleasant temperatures, good balloon conditions, golden light.
