Salta — The Beautiful★★★

★★★ Salta la Linda (Salta the Beautiful)

Salta is the most beautiful colonial city in Argentina — and this nickname is well-deserved. Around the Plaza 9 de Julio, perfectly preserved colonial buildings line up, including the terracotta-colored cathedral (1882), the pink Cabildo (now a historical museum), and arcades with cafés where you can watch the world go by for hours. Salta has something that many Argentine cities lack: warmth and coziness. The people are friendlier, life is slower, and the evenings belong to music.

★★★ Plaza 9 de Julio

One of the most beautiful city squares in Argentina: palm trees, jacaranda trees, the central fountain, surrounded by the terracotta-colored cathedral, the pastel pink Cabildo (now a museum), elegant colonial houses with arcades and cafés. In the evening, the plaza is illuminated and lively — families stroll, children play, couples sit on benches. Here, you feel the provincial soul of Argentina, beyond the hectic Buenos Aires.

★★★ MAAM — Museo de Arqueología de Alta Montaña

The most moving museum in Argentina. It houses the “Children of Llullaillaco" — three perfectly preserved Inca child mummies (a girl about 15 years old, “La Doncella"; a boy about 7 years old; a girl about 6 years old, “La Niña del Rayo"), who were buried over 500 years ago on the summit of the Llullaillaco volcano (6,739 m!) as offerings to the gods. Due to the extreme cold and dryness, they are so perfectly preserved that they look as if they are sleeping — hair, skin, clothing, even facial expressions are recognizable. It is deeply impressive and disturbing at the same time. For preservation reasons, only one of the three mummies is displayed at a time (rotation every 6 months).

Mitre 77, at Plaza 9 de Julio. Tue–Sun 10:00–18:00. Approx. 5,000 ARS. No photos allowed in the mummy room.

★★ Cerro San Bernardo

Salta's home mountain offers a 360° panorama over the city and the Lerma Valley. Two options to get up: The Teleférico (cable car, approx. 5,000 ARS round trip, 8 min.) from Parque San Martín or on foot via the 1,070 steps (approx. 45 min., strenuous in the heat!). At the top: a small waterfall, cactus garden, café, and — at sunset — one of the most beautiful panoramas in the northwest.

Cable car: daily 10:00–19:30. On foot: start at Güemes Street (signposted). Go in the morning or evening — too hot at noon!

★★ Iglesia San Francisco

The bright red and gold church with the tallest church tower in South America (54 m) is a classic photo motif. The elaborate Baroque facade in terracotta red and cream white stands out in the cityscape. Inside: impressive wood carvings and a quiet cloister.

★★★ Peñas Folklóricas — The Soul of the Northwest

Salta's famous folklore pubs are the counterpart to Buenos Aires' milongas: Here, tango is not danced, but Zamba, Chacarera, Gato, and Cueca — the traditional dances and music of the northwest. Live bands play guitar, Bombo (large drum), and Quena (Andean flute), the audience claps, sings, and dances along. Plus: Empanadas Salteñas and Torrontés wine. An unforgettable evening!

  • Peña Balderrama (San Martín 1126): The most famous Peña in Salta — named after the folklore song of the same name. Live music every evening from 9:00 pm, the atmosphere rises around 11:00 pm. Approx. 3,000–5,000 ARS entry + food/drinks
  • La Casona del Molino (Luis Burela 1): More authentic and a bit wilder — locals dance on the tables here. Saturday evening is the highlight
  • Peña La Vieja Estación (Balcarce 885): In the Barrio Balcarce, Salta's nightlife district

Salta as a Base

Salta is the perfect hub for the northwest: Tours start from here to the Quebrada de Humahuaca (3h to Purmamarca), to Cafayate (3.5h via the spectacular Quebrada de las Flechas), to the Salinas Grandes (3h), and to the Tren a las Nubes. Plan at least 2 days in Salta itself + 3–5 days for the surroundings.
