Holidays & Festivals
Argentina has many holidays — on which shops, banks, and some attractions are closed. At the same time, the festivals are a great opportunity to experience Argentine culture up close:
The Most Important Holidays
| Date | Holiday | What Happens |
|---|---|---|
| January 1 | Año Nuevo (New Year) | Everything closed. New Year's Eve is celebrated with Asado and fireworks |
| February/March | Carnival | The carnival in the northwest (especially Tilcara and Humahuaca) is spectacular: indigenous rituals, devil dances, music. In Buenos Aires: the Murga carnival (drum groups in the barrios) |
| March 24 | Día de la Memoria | Memorial Day for the 1976 military coup. Large demonstrations on the Plaza de Mayo — moving and politically charged |
| April 2 | Día de los Veteranos y Caídos del Malvinas | Memorial Day for the Falklands War. Ceremony and nationwide minute of silence |
| May 25 | Revolución de Mayo | National holiday! Celebrations on the Plaza de Mayo. Locro (the national stew) is cooked everywhere — on every square, in every restaurant |
| June 20 | Día de la Bandera | Flag Day (death anniversary of Manuel Belgrano, the flag designer) |
| July 9 | Día de la Independencia | Independence Day! Major celebrations, especially in Tucumán (where independence was declared). Military parades in Buenos Aires |
| August 17 | Paso a la Inmortalidad del Gral. San Martín | Death anniversary of the national hero. Schools and offices closed |
| October 12 | Día del Respeto a la Diversidad Cultural | Formerly "Columbus Day," renamed "Day of Cultural Diversity" — a conscious decision by Argentina |
| November 10 | Día de la Tradición | Day of Tradition — Gaucho festivals, equestrian shows, folklore. Especially impressive in San Antonio de Areco (113 km from BA) |
| December 25 | Navidad (Christmas) | Christmas in summer! Argentina celebrates on Christmas Eve (24th) with Asado under the starry sky, fireworks at midnight, and gifts. The 25th is quiet — everything closed |
★★★ The Major Festivals
- Fiesta de la Vendimia (Mendoza, March): Argentina's largest wine festival — two weeks of parades, concerts, wine queen elections, and a closing gala in the Greek amphitheater at Cerro de la Gloria with fireworks. Unforgettable!
- Tango Festival (Buenos Aires, August): The Mundial de Tango — the tango world championship with the best dancers in the world. Two weeks of milongas, concerts, and workshops throughout the city. A must for tango fans
- Carnival in Tilcara (February/March): The most authentic carnival in Argentina — Andean rituals, devil masks, alcohol, music, and an energy that sweeps you away
- Fiesta del Poncho (Catamarca, July): The Poncho Festival — handicrafts, folklore, and the best weavers of the northwest
