Cairns — Gateway to the Reef★★
Cairns (pronounced "Kärns") is the unofficial capital of the tropical north and the most popular starting point for the Great Barrier Reef. The city itself has no beach (the harbor is a mangrove swamp), but the Cairns Esplanade Lagoon — a huge, free seawater pool at the harbor — makes up for it brilliantly. Sun loungers, barbecue grills, lawns, and swimming pools, all free.
Cairns is a relaxed backpacker town with a tropical atmosphere — palm trees, monsoon rains, open-air bars, and a night market. The city is compact and walkable.

- Skyrail Rainforest Cableway: 7.5 km cable car ride over the rainforest from Smithfield to Kuranda. View of the treetops and Barron Falls. 62 AUD (one way). Combine with the Kuranda Scenic Railway (historic train route, 50 AUD) for a round trip.
- Kuranda Village: A small rainforest village in the mountains behind Cairns. Markets, butterfly garden, Aboriginal art, and the Australian Butterfly Sanctuary (22 AUD).
- Cairns Night Markets (54–60 Abbott Street): Evening market with Asian street food, souvenirs, and massages. Daily 4:30 p.m.–11:00 p.m. Pad Thai from 12 AUD.
- Bungee Jumping & Rafting: AJ Hackett Bungee (149 AUD), White-Water Rafting on the Tully River (Class IV, day trip 229 AUD).
💡 Tipp
Cairns is hotter and more humid than you think — 30–33 °C with high humidity all year round. Pack light, breathable clothing and drink LOTS of water. The Esplanade Lagoon is the perfect place to cool off — free and clean, with lifeguards.
